Simple.
Make the weapon/item MORE powerful.
Set the party against something very magical and very powerful...and let them kick it's butt.
As the weapon/item is used to strike the final blow, there is a flash of light, an unleashing of energy, and after wards, in the course of the next adventure, the item gradually develops more powers. After a while it becomes sentient. Childlike at first, but growing.
Have the party take shelter with monks or nuns for a while.
Then have a big fight, Magnificent 7 style. Afterwards, the item announces that it is retiring, to take up a life of farming and protecting the village. By this point it's ego is so high that the party can't force it to obey them, so they have to leave it.
