What type of campaign do you prefer to play if you managed to play long enough to get from level 1 to level 20? Please explain why.

I picked "One or more mega adventures combined with shorter adventures" for my selection.

The reasoning: I enjoy an "epic" type of campaign with plenty of world events that can shake the very foundations of what everything is built upon. To me, this makes the most memorable experience(s). I like having choices as well, when there are lots of small adventures attached that we can go off on to explore other places and not be railroaded into a specific path.

I felt that "an adventure path" was way too restrictive as it is just a polite way of doing a railroad adventure because it is pre-written with things that NEED to happen in order to move the story or path forward. It is not very adaptable if the party strays from the confinement of the story in the AP.

I also felt that "lots of short adventures" felt too sandboxy to me, I like an overarching plot line that is "moveable" and changes with the decisions made by the group of adventurers, something that is reactive. Sure lots of short adventures can be fun, but then it just feels unimaginative to me in the end when the party's choices make little or no difference in the world other than to say rescue a kidnapped goat from a group of goblins and get paid a few silver by the farmer for the deed.

The last option "it doesn't matter" wasn't even given a second thought when looking at your choices.

Its been a while since I gamed in d&d but in most games I played in it has either been one offs or occasional games in succession and when I run it I like to have a series of games to run but its rare when any of the other otions presented above became that important.

I guess its really up to your own personal taste!
 

For me it doesn't matter. As long as we're having fun. I've done the sandbox thing, and with the right DM it is a blast. I've done the megamodule route several times - almost all were fun (one exception was a bad DM, but I don't play with his group any more). Even a "railroad" can be fun if the DM runs it right, because you're so invested in the story line that you willing follow the tracks just to see where they lead.

My current group has just started an adventure path (which, really, is just another form of Mega Module), and so far we're having fun with it. :D
 

I voted that it doesn't matter, because I think that they are all good options, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Really its more about the quality of the adventures more than the format.
 

my preference was always for having a long term story arc that led into numerous side adventures; wasn't always easy to keep focus on the main story goal though, especially when you're mixing in published adventures with home brewed ones...

Ideally, my absolute favourite would be a campaign with a mix of short and long adventures intertwined together, so that the party is active in more quests at the same time. But that's probably quite difficult for the average DM (at least it is for me).

Beside that, I like all the options in this poll equally...
 

Typically I prefer lots of short adventures. I do occasionally run larger mega-adventures or even Adventure Paths, but I use them as more of a continuing sub-plot running through the core of the campaign, with smaller adventures being episodic in nature (from game session to game session - one smaller adventure per game session).

I voted for lots of short adventures, because that's how we played back in the day. I almost voted for It Doesn't Matter, because it really depends on the people you're playing with. But I didn't because the one time I played an Adventure Path (didn't finish), I didn't care for it at all.
