Based on the date I thought it was possibly the planned name for the D&D Minis game.

DDM came out in 2003 right?

Looks like the applied for it in 2000...

Which is aound when chainmail came out isn't it? Or am I off on my dates?

Shrug... Maybe it was DDM's planned name but somone thought it would be a confusing name?

Wasn't that what the Chainmail book about experience and stuff in warbands was supposed to be called?

It was later subsumed into the full rulebook, which only was released as a pdf.
*Checks printed out copy.*
Yes, the leaders of warbands were called warlords, all right.

Yeah, this strikes me as the possible name for the product that would later become Chainmail, or possibly a D&D/Chainmail crossover sourcebook. I don't have anything to back this idea up, just speculation that seems to make sense to me.

D&D Warlords was the original title of the game that became Chainmail. When the first head of minis at WotC, Bob Watts, left the company, his replacement's first act was to try to cancel the game. When that didn't happen, the named changed from D&D Warlords, which the design team liked, to D&D Chainmail, which the design team didn't like.

Well, that explains a few things. Thank you. Got any more info you could part with?

Like; Were the chainmail figs intentionally made with so many parts to discourage novice mini painters?

Dude, I could write a book on the painful birth and shameful death of Chainmail.

No. For some reason a fellow with a lot of experience in minis made some very poor choices in deciding how to handle the molding of some of the minis, the trog zombie being the worst of them.
