I got the Holmes books first, but the rules were a bit beyond me (I was in 4th grade, about 10 years old). The first ruleset that "clicked" with me was the Moldvay set.

Didn't vote. My first experience was with the Original D&D but the books were owned by someone else back then...waaaay back then...

Some of you might not even have been twinkle's in your parent's eyes at that point.

The very first game I played was 1st Ed AD&D. However, that doesn't really count, since the DM handled all the rules. (This actually led to my thinking that was how the game was supposed to be, and so up until I went to university some years later, I rolled all the dice for my players.)

The first rules system I actually used was BD&D (Mentzer). Though even that was after a proto-D&D system I cobbled together from reading "What is Dungeons & Dragons"!

First I played was Holmes Blue box. First I owned was D&D Basic red box.

Man, I hadn't realized red box came out after AD&D 1st. I had my Basic & Expert sets for a couple of years before upgrading to AD&D 1st, and I remember playing that for a while before 2nd. Were things just that spread out?

Voted blue box, but we were playing by my older brother's cribbed notes from OD&D for a few months before we convinced Mom we had to OWN this game!

Moldvay Basic here, but quickly mixed in with AD&D (statue & demon covers)!

A friend of the family introduced it to my brother and I, then gave us the books and dice before he left! I don't remember if we played Dungeon! before or after this...
