What Will Happen to Greyhawk?

Totally.

Well, OK, the swords are Ratan.
Well, that's for when we're practicing within the group. When we invite other groups to go through the steam tunnels competitively against us, we'll need real ones of course.

Erik's probably quite busy on his own messageboards right now (!!) but I just read him reply to someone over there that he's "on the record" (his words) at Wizards that he'd be very interested in any licensing whatnot that they might every wish to make available regarding Greyhawk. Apparently joint projects aren't out of the question in the future - while it doesn't take too much reading between the lines to figure that the Paizo peeps are not entirely happy with this decision I don't see it as an irreconcilable split between Paizo and Wizards.

So, very very unlikely, as it has always been ... but not impossible?

They can take my Greyhawk when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers

Technically, Greyhawk died when Gary left TSR.

Officially, Greyhawk might not see another product for a long, long time - if ever again - but it will never really die as long as there are old grognards around like me to run adventures in it.

That's fine...

...so long as the other groups we invite are still using rattan.

WotC is going to kill GREYHAWK once and for all, I'd reckon.

...which suits me just as well - the last good GREYHAWK products were written nearly thirty years ago. :P

Nah. They'll sit on the brand and license it, if someone (including Paizo) wants to use it.

Yeah. I still use the boxed set as the basis for my Greyhawk campaign, and I gave up on new Greyhawk product back when TSR was killing the brand with crap.

Frankly, I won't shed a tear once new "official" Greyhawk supplements stop coming out. The less stuff that's released, the less they'll continue to ruin my beloved Grehawk.

I know that Erik is a true fan of the milieu, but he is naturally beholden to the corporate masters, and businessmen make piss-poor hobbyists. Even his kindly influence couldn't halt the decline.

If Greyhawk is ever revived, let it be done by a group of true fans of the setting, who are hobbyists themselves, who won't try to approach it with some agenda of "tearing it all down to start over", as was done with FtA, or to try to change its nature to wring more sheckles out of hapless players on hardcover books that should be released as softcovers for half the cost. Let it be revived by those who understand the unique nature of Greyhawk, and who are willing to embrace that nature. And let it be revived by people who don't feel so personally threatened by Gygax and Kuntz that they are creatively locked out of their own creation.

Let it be revived for the right reasons. By people who genuinely love and believe in the setting, rather than someone looking for a quick buck and who sees Greyhawk as the means to make said buck.

I just thought I would open a separate thread to discuss what will happen to Greyhawk after the demise of Dragon and Dungeon (RIP), as these were the two official outlets for non-Living Greyhawk material. I for one would like to thank Erik and the gang for igniting my interest in the campaign world. Here's hoping that Expedition to Castle Greyhawk goes well.

You know, I was just thinking the same thing. Paizo was increasing my interest in Greyhawk, but I'm no longer so sure about its future.

But would hobbyists make piss-poor businessmen? I know some of you have that bad gaming store experience.

OR once they crossed over, you forget them being hobbyists, yes?

From the optimistic view, since we don't have any info from WotC on how they'll be leveraging Dragon and Dungeon in their online content, it's possible that we'll continue to see more GH content on their site.... I'd still rather see Paizo publishing an Age of Worms hardcover, a Maure Castle hardcover, and more GH material, since Lisa and Erik would treat the setting well.

OTOH, if WotC wanted to bury GH once more, this would be the ideal time to do so, since Dungeon was providing 90% of the official support for the setting. Not that the unofficial support isn't worth checking out, as well ;)
