What Will Happen to Greyhawk?

WOTC asked for references to Tenser and the City of Greyhawk to be taken out of AoW. I suspect that Eberron is at least partially to blame for that.

Aye. Partially. But so is Forgotten Realms, Mystara, Scarred Lands, Kalamar, Aerth, and countless OTHER home-brewed DM settings.

Making AoW a little more generic allows DMs to drop into anything simpler rather than forcing it into Oerth.

I'm assuming you're saying that just to goad people into spiteful comments thrown your way, not because you really believe that.

NO! Not at all. I really believe that there may well be more Greyhawk content with the magazines going online.

But if you do really believe that, I would recommend you explore the reasons Dungeon and Dragon were pulled.

We do not know most of reasons the magazines are moving to online formatting and under WOTC instead of Paizo.

Confirmed Facts:
1.Dungeon Magazine selling Great!
2.Dungeon Magazine lauded by critics and fans alike!

Neither of those two points has anything to do with why there are changes being made as far as we know. It's speculation to draw from those facts any conclusions about this change.

3.Dungeon Magazine places lots of emphasis on Greyhawk and Old-school flavor.

No reason to think that will change. They said already it's going to be the same kind of content.

4.Dungeon Magazine still less than $10 for 3 big adventures plus other content.

My guess is that it will be even cheaper now that it will be online.

5.WotC sales of adventures steady but mediocre.

Not sure how that is relevant.

6.WotC adventures savaged by critics and fans alike! And folks with spellchecker...

Not sure how that is relevant.

7.WotC places lots of emphasis on Eberron and more and more new rules.

Yet the magazines will continue with much the same content as before.

8.WotC adventures cost $20 to $40 per adventure.

Not sure how that is relevant.

So those are the facts we know. Until WotC cowboys up to the bar and explains themselves in a thorough manner, folks can only assume the worst.

Why? Most of what you just said is not relevant to the topic you raised, which was "Why are they making this change". That is, unless your answer is speculation.

As far as we know, there will be plenty of Greyhawk in the new magazines.

Misty, there was lots of Greyhawk content in the mags mostly because of Erik and some of the other Paizo staff. WotC isn't likely to continue that trend based on the products they already sell. In fact, Eberron and FR fans might be happy that WotC is back in charge of the content, as I expect there will be a lot more Eberron and FR camapign specific material, and very little, if any Greyhwak stuff, which would mostly refer to core content, rather than GH specifically.

Hi,

One of the saddest things to come out of all of this is that since Erik and co took over at the helm of Dungeon, there have been lots of references in adventures, not just to Greyhawk, but also to the larger D&D mythos (Isle of Dread, the demon princes, Tamoachan, old monsters such as the flumph and the froghemoth coming back). I'm not sure this will be repeated in WotC's online content and the Paizo guys won't be able to do this in Pathfinder.

Cheers

But would hobbyists make piss-poor businessmen? I know some of you have that bad gaming store experience.

OR once they crossed over, you forget them being hobbyists, yes?

all the oldskoolerz: Wasn't Waldorf also the name of that guy?

Yes. Waldorf was last seen (so far as I know) in the 1998-era Greyhawk City book, "The Adventure Begins", by Roger Moore. There, Waldorf is an old man in a tavern, who drinks heavily and claims that he used to control the whole word. I believe the character running the bar is one of the mooks from Gygax's campaign, like one Mordy's cohorts.

I'd give this a 99.999% chance of being an accurate prediction.

Since 1984, Greyhawk has most often been seen by the owners of D&D as a distraction from their current leading venture. Once but long ago, that was Forgotten Realms. Now, it is Eberron.

Over the years, I've bought 2-3 FR books, but never Eberron. It may be fine, but every $ it gets is a $ voted to kill Greyhawk, IMHO.

I'm just a mirror in this case. :]

To be fair, there are small business owners that are decent RPG hobbyists. But they can make a fair amount of good and bad business decisions.
