D&D 5E What would a demon do with a dead Paladin?

It also depends on how powerfull and wicked this demon is.
If it turns out to be the kind of demon who enjoys messing with peoples mind, he might try and mess up the paladin.

Just puting some demonic marks on the paladin casting a raise dead and leaving a message that the paladin is no longer in control of his mind and any action he takes is becouse the demon wishes it.
And then just enjoy watching the paladin struggle with this as he goes on whith live ever doubting his own actions.

Another option that requires some player buy in is that the paladin is raised but at his next level up gains a fiend warlock level, and this deomon in the back of his mind trying to convince him to take more warlock levels.

I may argue that a demon with enough power to animate and control a dead character away from his god should not be fighting 2nd level characters in the first place. There could be some instances where PCs encounter the BBEG early in their career and need to run away or be rescued only to return later when they can defeat the evil. There could also be a situation where the paladin bravely stands toe to toe with the evil, sacrificing himself to save his fellow party members.

If the players died from their own actions or stupidity, then they should remain dead and their bodies animated for future use. If you as the DM set them up to die, then just roll up new characters and move on unless you plan to use the dead character as motivation for the next group that plays. If I had a large amount of game set up and the party died like this I may have the new party start where they enter the temple at the last moments of the last fight and see the demon and other bad guys destroying the other party. They should have some background on the other party as being an up and coming group in town and relize that they should run away, save you need to have another entrance where the 3rd group starts play witnessing the original group dying and another adventuring party rush in to be destroyed as well.

I can't recall if this is in the 5th Edition Monster Manual, but a Revenant. The only catch is that the Paladin-turned-Revenant blames the surviving PC's for letting his corpse be desecrated and begins to hunt them down.

If I recall, Revenants are around CR 4-5 so they are potent, but not incredibly powerful.

I believe they cover the Revenant as a PC option in the Gothic themed unearthed arcana.

Hold an auction where they claim they brought the paladin back to life and are trying to sell the paladin to former enemies to torture. Make certain the PCs hear about this. Have it be a trap. Especially if combined with one of the Paladin-is-intelligent options offered earlier in thread.

Does the player want the paladin character back? Are they cool with a little side adventure before that happens?

A couple of ideas:

You can take the Buffy the Vampire Slayer (tv show) route. In that show, when someone was turned into a vampire, they actually died and a demon inhabited their body complete with memories and everything. So you can do a possession similar to that. The demon can possess the body (or any demon/ghost really and be a minion of the demon). The possessed paladin then goes on a villainous streak using the identity of the paladin, using his personal knowledge of the party to really mess with them. The player can even assume the new identity and play in the party for a while as the possessed paladin and lure them in a false sense of security. Make up some reason they came back, like the fleeing enemies ran into a group of clerics who battled them and recovered the body. It can all be a made up story, just something that's feasible. Once the paladin is recovered and has his body back, he rejoins the group for real and has to undo the damage his possessed self caused.

Clone him/make a construct of him. Say they get the paladin back and everything is right in the world. Then tales of him start spreading about the evil things he's done. There may be bounties out for him. People are afraid of him and swear they've seen him before, even though he's never been to wherever they are. Perhaps the party only got a piece of the paladin back and used it to raise him, so the false version has some kind of tell, like missing the finger they used to raise the paladin. Create a nice little villain for the paladin that knows everything about him.

Have the paladin haunt the party until they get him back. His ghost appears with cryptic warnings or they see him passing a doorway in the night. In reality, the demon managed to trap his soul somewhere but when the demon loses focus, the paladin can get out briefly to warn his friends. It could give the party some leads about what to do next if they are stuck or how to find the demon if they are lost.

Side note, I once played a paladin that unknowingly had an evil twin. The evil version worked behind the scenes to mess with me until I learned about him. It was very fun. The hook of the game was that reality wasn't what we thought it was. We were really in a prison run by mindflayers who were trying to pry some dark secret from our minds. We learned something maddening (very H.P. Lovecraft) and it broke our minds. What we learned was something the mindflayers needed to invade our world. We escape the prison and my paladin learns that not only was he close to his goddess, they were actually lovers. My goddess refused to let any sin taint her perfect paladin, so she took it from me. That sin had to go somewhere, so it became an evil version of me. An anti-paladin made entirely of sin who knew everything about me. It made for an awesome villain. So I think using this opportunity to make a fun villain for the player of the paladin could be fun.

It would depend upon the type of demon and the campaign. In a light-hearted game, I probably just had the Paladin be disposed of by the demon and go on from there. In a game that was shooting for something more intense, I'd look at the type of demon and ask what their goals normally are. If it is merely destruction, I'd have the demon dispose of the body. If the demon was a succubus, I might have the demon possess the body and use it to try to seduce an important NPC. If the demon were a bargainer, I might have them use the body as a conduit to negotiate with the soul of the Paladin to try and corrupt it.

Since the paladins' deity would likely intervene on behalf of the spirit/soul, about the only stuff that would happen is restricted to the corpse. You could obviously come up with all kinds of bad stuff for that, but I think this is a time where leaving it up to the player's imagination would work best; they know the corpse was taken, but never truly know what happened to it.
