What would you change about your gaming group?

All I'd really like is to have two more players like the two that I already have. We had four players until just a short time ago, but now that real life has intruded into my gaming world, we're left with two.

They're great guys and good friends, but I'm having one heck of a time trying to run a campaign for two PCs. I can't seem to get it right, no matter what I try. But, despite my DM angst, we are having fun, so I guess it's all good.

Part of the problem with a lot of these situations, especially with the players not reading manuals and/or DM created background materials, is that often times the players are simply not as into the game. Sure they like playing enough, but it's not their main hobby interest, whereas it usually is for the DM. People are into different things. I have some players who enjoy talking about the game sometimes when we're not playing and I have others who just want to know when to show up and leave it at that. They're not into D&D enough to want to spend a large portion of their time and money on game stuff as I do. Hence, we have three PHBs in a group of nine. But, when it actually comes down to playing, they're all great fun. So I have no complaints.

I did have one long time player who had the habit of blowing off sessions or leaving early because his girlfriend decided to summon him. Now I just know better than to let him be a permanent member of the group, although I'd still welcome him for a one-shot.

First and fore most I would like to have more players. I currently have two players that I have gamed with for years. Next I would increase the level of roleplay on all our parts. We do a pretty good job of role playing, we have definately come a long way from our first gaming days, but we could be better.

Change My Group?

Hmmm, well as the DM, I really want to at least get the game underway. My PCs on the other hand don't want to make time to play, but constantly nag about the next game.
To prevent the players from falling into their normal classes, I created 10 second level PCs from which they could customize. I thought this would work, but when they leveled up they just mulitclassed into their favorite class.
What's a DM to do. I decided to try my hand in DMing on-line games on the Wizard's chatsite. What a Success, I've got 5 PCs all with well thought-out character descriptions and they all have their own gaming supplies. It is much more fun to play on-line with the people I have found, rather than the ones I scrounged up in my area.

Reading these horror stories makes me think I must have really lucked out with the group that I have. Granted, they aren't perfect. I wish our rogue gnome would be a little less munchkin-ish, but she is also a great roleplayer--go figure. (Either that, or she knows what kinds of characters she plays well.) I also think there is a something to be said for a little age/maturity (though I definately realize that one does not preclude the other).
