What would you do to make the d20 system more realistic?

I think the d20 mechanic serves its purpose fairly well. It's not really intended to be one of the more "realistic" systems. Dungeons & Dragons has always been a very "heroic" level game. The characters aren't just some shmoes off the street, they're Jackie Chan, they're James Bond, they are exceptional.

Now the title of this thread mentions d20 in general, not 3e in particular, so I will mention that there are "grittier" versions of d20 than 3e (CoC, etc.). I think there is tremendous latitude within the various d20 systems currently available. Enough so that someone could put together a set of d20 rules that suited their tastes just fine (assuming that a suitable d20 didn't already exist ;) ).

The problem with D&D is that it utterly fails to capture the feeling of being in a fight. It's not sufficiently dynamic. Combat feels not like being an actual FIGHT, but being in an attrition match where I hit you, and then you hit me. With nerf bats.

This is not how being in a fight feels.

Being in a fight isn't fun (IMO, watching or doing sport combat is another matter), and a game is supposed to be fun, so I don't think that combat in any RPG that involves some combat should feel like how it feels in a fight.

Being in a fight, not fun? You must be joking. I look back on my life, and the fondest, most enjoyable moments I remember involve being in a fight, a life-or-death struggle for survival. There's nothing like being in a fight to make you feel alive. Until you've been in a real fight, you don't know what it means to be truly alive. How can you not enjoy the feeling of being in a fight?

Because I don't like to be hurt, and because I do not like to hurt other, who does:rolleyes: ? Plus there is bad long term consequences to a fight.
