What would you do with a windfall?

<Office Space>2 chicks at the same time<Office Space>

seriously, probably pay off my loans, and use the rest to get into day trading stocks or something, hoping to hit the BIG payoff.

that's for the 50K

for the BIG jackpot, well, i'd pay off debts, hire a financial consultant, and set up an investment where i can live comfortably off the interest for the rest of my life so i don't have to work. i wouldn't have a whole lot of outward showings of my wealth, i'd still wear the same geeky tshirts and sweatpants from walmart. i'd drive a modestly priced but reliable car with geeky bumper stickers all over it. i'd live in a small apartment, although eventually once i owned enough arcade cabinets and pinball machines i would have to get a bigger place. but in general i wouldn't act like a wealthy person, and i'd take great pains to hide the fact that i have money from the public at large. because if i ever meet any girls, i want them to like me for me, not my money.

if it's big enough (like in the multi-trillions) i might even be able to use some of the money to fund some of my business dreams that i would love to see exist but that would draw such a small market they would be completely unprofitable, like my "Ultimate Gaming Center, Arcade, And Playground for Big Kids" (aka immature adults like myself who want to act like kids and do stuff like play in the ball pit and swing on the swings), or my Radio Station that Caters Entirely to My Own Personal Tastes, which would play video game music, gaming and geekery related talk shows, random music that i happen to like, etc. and my Fanboy Network TV station, a channel devoted to 24/7 gaming, comic books, and other geeky fanboy stuff. i'd create an alternate identity for myself that would be listed as the owner, and only a few people like close family members and those who have a need to know would be able to connect me with the mysterious rich tycoon who created these businesses.

50K: Pay off credit cards and car. Buy a beater pick-up truck. Put the rest on the mortgage.

25 mil: Pay off credit cards and car. Buy a larger home, my grandmother's old house in Missouri, a mini-bus, and a relatively inexpensive beachfront home. Set aside about eight million for myself and my kids to live off of the interest from. Use the rest to make friends' lives as easy as possible. Quit work to work on some projects I've wanted time for for a while now.

1 bil: Pay off credit cards and car. Move my family and all of my friends (and one ex-girlfriend) and their immediate families to a nice newly-built community near Lake of the Ozarks. Set aside enough money for all of us to be comfortable from interest from that point forward. Build a bunch of scaled-down "learning center" replicas of world treasures - the Sphinx, The Leaning Tower, The Statue of Liberty, Taj Mahal, Kremlin, etc. - nearby, and charge admission to see them. The proceeds would go towards elementary education in our country, and student groups could schedule to come for free. Amongst all of these, I would build a Temple to Tyr, which would be a year-round convention center for RPG and similar gaming. Proceeds from anything that made money in that - vending machines, etc. - would go to improve the place, and support ENWorld. :)

50K: Same as everybody else.

25 million: Pay off all debts, as above. Buy new house on a new plot of land, offer to let my friends drive the bulldozing equipment for free that demolishes my old house. :D Build a new house on that and sell it for a premium, just because I'd feel badly about selling my old house to someone.

Past that, travel the world for a year, give friends and family some kick-butt Christmas gifts (or just plain cash, that speaks sweetly, too), and pay up every bill I had in advance for like five years. Invest the rest, and find a new job and keep working.

1 billion:As above, but I'd give my wife about 100 million dollars to start an animal rescue organization - complete with multi-level kennels, company rescue vehicles, helicopters with harness lifts, staff of highly-trained veterinarians, the works... So she can be Jane :):):):)ing Goodall for every moment of her spare time for the rest of her days.

Then, I'd Build a gated community, complete with D&D gaming center in its hub, subsidize about 20 of my closest gaming friends to move there, add in swimming pools, firearms practice range (hey, gotta do something when not gaming, right?) and servants' staff. Invest the last 400 million or so in diversified world-wide interests, and write my highly-falsified and exciting memoirs. ;)

I figure you won't find folks doing really interesting things with a windfall unless they are already on economically steady ground. It sounds like most of us have big student loans and such, and simply ought to do sane things with it, rather than fun things.

I have a prioritized list of things to do with big windfall cash, and I'd simply run through it until I run out of stuff:

Pay off my student loans. Pay off my fiancee's student loans. Buy a car. Buy a home. Invest enough so that I can reasonably expect a $50K/yr income. Start paying off other debts in my family. Set up college funds for my niece and nephew. Etc, etc...

That's already running into millions of dollars, and I haven't really gotten to anythign fun yet.

Let's see... for $50K (I'll assume it's USD = ~ $63,553.82 CDN) I'd set aside enough cash to go back to school and then, if there's any left, pay off bills.

For a big prize like $25 Million ($31,775,575.28 CDN) I'd do the same as above, buy nice homes for my mom and brother, and a nice piece of land for myself, a sailboat (man I love sailing), the obligatory new vehicle, and donate some cash to charity(ies).

Oh yeah, join mythusmage for a sasquatch finding expedition...

For 50 grand I would

1) Pay off debts
2) buy new computer
3) buy new HD TV and set aside some cash to fund the cable bills

For Winning the Lottery Jackpot I would

1) Same as 50 grand
2) Same as 50 grand for family/friends
3) Open a local gamestore/gaming arena
4) Bath in the adulation of women who suddenly find me attractive

5) Get a tour bus, you know like the kind bands use, that you can live in. With all of the extras - satelite TV, full kitchen, nice bedroom etc. Hire somebody who can fix and drive it - preferably a gamer. Go from convention to convention playing games and meeting people. This is my big dream.

If I won billions and billions?
1) Same as the lottery win
2) Write out a lot of $9,999 cashiers checks and give them away.
3) Finally, have a complete collection of D&D minis in the numbers I want/need.

50K would pay off about 60% of my current debt, which would free up a lot of monthly money. I think if i pay off the right debts I could free up about $1400.00 a month, leaving about $600.00 per month. That would be sweet.
