Legend
In my game the group is on a dwarven quest for veangance after a guildmaster was murdered. The trail has led to a planar gate city and the party killed a sadistic rakshasa they believe was involved in the murder. they have some info on the murderer (or maybe the guy behind the murder) and what he's doing but know they don't have the whole picture.
Thinking to pick up some loot they check out the rakshasa's lair. Investigating his trap and illusion filled mansion they make it to his hidden basement overcoming locks, traps, and a guardian golem. Exploring the hallway down below they find five giant tapestries of different chained women along the hallway wall.
The paladin has an artefact sword of Truth that gives him true seeing while wielding the sword so he sees the tapestries are illusions covering hidden doors.
The party goes into the first depicting a woman hanging in a pool arms outstretched. Inside is a great crystal pool with the blindfolded woman, her head and arms above water with six chains holding her arms out taught. Stairs lead down into the chamber and there is a reclining couch with a table beside it with a sketch pad and pictures of the woman as well as a serving tray and the old remains of some food. There are many barbed lashes and various types of hooks hanging on the walls. The woman moans slightly and flinches when she hears the party enter.
The paladin sees it is an illusion covering an aboleth, hooded so it cannot make line of sight, and the chains pierce its tentacles so they cannot lash out. He also notes the sketches are illusions covering writing. They don't know yet if they share any common languages with it but the cleric has comprehend languages.
They are super tough 16th level and not significantly damaged or down on resources.
As a party/player what do you think you would want to do in such a situation?
Note that there is no morality/code problem for the paladin. As DM I'm fine with however he wants to play him (kill evil helpless enemies, show mercy, whatever) and the player knows this.
The party is talking about having their archer shoot the aboleth to death from range or just leaving it and shutting the door. They want to check out each room and see if there are any non-evil monster women in need of rescue. They seem to want to either nuke from space or avoid entirely any unnecessary contact with chained evil creatures here or anything connected to them.
