What would you like to see in a d20 future setting?

Woodshed games is discussing work on a d20 future campaign setting. My question to you guys is what exactly would you like to see in a sci-fi campaign setting?

We don't want it to be cliche, but we don't want players to be unable to connect with it.

I would like to see a SF setting that is mostly realistic, based on Earth's future, and actually plausible. The only one like that that exists to me, is AD 2300 from the old GDW.

You could save a friend of mine a bunch of work and "update/modify" Star Frontiers to d20. ;) He really loves that game.

Tank Girl d20 perhaps?

A Ice Pirates/Spaceballs combination would be for a nice "light" future setting, or even lighter a Mel Brooks d20 system.

For some non-movie inspired inspiration, some games with some decent followings are Starcraft, Masters of Orion, and Wing Commander. They all have some common elements as far as weaponery, armour, and ship/unit construction. And besides, they make research more fun. ;)

I'm with trancejeremy on this one. I like a more realistic view of Earth's future. I think the best sci-fi setting yet has been the Heavy Gear books from Dream Pod 9. I like the feel of space travel being dangerous, ala HG and Firefly; not high space fantasy like Star Trek and such.

If there was a new setting, I would like to see the following:

1) Gritty, dangerous space travel.
2) An easy method of resolving ship-to-ship combat.
3) Advanced technology, but at a still foreseeable level. using D20: Future's PL's as an example, I'm a big fan of PL6, with some of the cutting edge technolgy being from PL7.
4) Plenty of locations to explore that can be easily utilized in a campaign.
5) There is no NEED for aliens. If they are included, make them subdued, not over the top.

Something that replicates the far future sci-fi of Iain M Bank's culture novels.

But really anything I can plunder for my PL7 game.

How about intense negotiations with WotC and Frank Herbert to revive the Dune d20 game that was bandied about back when D&D3.0 first came out?

Most of the crunch I need I'm going to be getting from PDF and the Future Players Companion from The Game Mechanics so what I need is good fluff.

  • Ship Deck Plans.
  • System maps.
  • Planetary maps.
  • Refrence sheets that include details like % water, atmospheric composition, gravity, satellites and such. Basicly, those things that add to suspension of disbelief, but are too much work for me to do myself.
  • Spaceports.
  • A single equipment table that includes all progress levels and incorperates Purchace DC changes for the campaigns PL.
  • Repeat above for ranged weapons.
  • Repeat above for other weapons.
