Whatever happened to Maztica?

I appreciate the clarification...thanks :)

I do recall being somewhat annoyed when I discovered that Kara Tur was not the default setting when OA (when released). However, I can see why: WotC didn't want to link OA to the Forgotten Realms. The book turned out well though.

Still...I would love to see new products covering Maztica, Kara Tur, and The Lands of Fate (can't remember the name).
First off, don't shoot the messenger, but I'm compelled to bring up the link to a related discussion. Read it at your own peril:

I do apologize for the language I used in that discussion but that is my most base feeling ... still.

As for Maztica, Hordeland, and Zakhara/Al-Qadim... No one has been granted the right to publish them, and Wizards have been way too conservative (or "slow" to put it bluntly) to get those products updated and released.

Cool, thanks for the link...there seems to be enough info over there for me to delve for a while. I'll just let this thread sink now.

Cheers.

I supose they could release a supplement about it, its not as tough as Kara-Tur since known Matzica is pretty small.

Problem is that you need to find someone with a certain kind of background to do more that a "simple" convertion of the old 2nd ed Matiza and its not a six months ptoject, its at least a year old project with some kind of playtesting so its not another "hoard" falling into the realms.

It would be a expensive project with unknown results.

And oh yes, there would be elves .... there is a reference to elves and knowing FR "creative" staff instead of using wild elves they would come up with some stupid subrace called "galaxy elves or "comet elves" or "pulsar elves" or "brainfart elves" ...

I believe they will be released as seperate books in the Forgotten Realms line. I know Unapproachable East was just released or is about to be released and it may deal with the Hordelands/Karatur, but I am not entirely sure.

Unapproachable East will not include any info on Karatur and will have scant info on the hordelands. It's not that far 'East"

See here for more info.

I love how WOTC thinks they can basically create a campaign setting with more crunch than fluff. Without fluff, the crunch just seems like slightly related material with nothing substantial connecting it. I hope they stop this trend with FR, as I really like the setting and I can probably write better crunch for it by myself. :(

That was not the reason.

Kara-Tur is .... a finacial dead end and there was a lot of confussion about Legend of the Five Rings and AEG end up with Rokugan d20 with WotC doing OA.

Maztica was a part of TSR wounderful (not) idea of linking earth events and cultures to Toril, one thing is inspiration and another is picking up a history book and cut-and-past (a tactic that is still being used in today by WotC) and they found FR players were not too happy in seeing that.

They are not "removed" (unlike long established FR lore) but they rarely mentioned, with is a good thing because gods knows any book about it would intruduce yet another elf subrace ...

You said it. I'd like to see a suppliment detailing lands beyond Faerun, but I'm afraid that WOTC would introduce 3 or 4 more elf subraces. Heck, even one more elf subrace would be too many.

I would love to see Maztica done right in 3E. The idea had a lot of potential, but it really didn't seem to work too well.

In terms of crunch it just felt like half a candy bar. Didn't seem like it would make a very complete adventuring experience without the FR 'Old Worlders' to make it a colonization epic.

That was sad and a little insulting consider how close to inspired the really Maztica parts of it were.

Al-Quadim was very very nicely done, and I do hope that someone does a D20/3E equivalent. In my opinion that was one of the best settings that TSR did for 2E. At the very least the adventures were the most literary and a pure delight to play.

I have to agree with you on that one. "Star Elves"?

I guess they did this to make the product more appealing, other than being rehash old material for 3e. After all, we old-timers have bought a pile of FR supplements up to our neck (literally). And in this trying economy (unless you basically fart money) one can't help to wonder if it's prudent to buy a 3e version of the same old material.
