What's a Monte Ranger?

Eh? I assume you're referring to the alternate bard and sorcerer of the BoEM... Of course, the alternate psionic prestige classes are on his website, but they're Bruce Cordell's work.

They're fantastic compared to the original versions. Anyone else remember wondering what the hell he'd been thinking for the Metamind?

Yup...

That would be the ones I'm talkin' 'bout, I've not had a chance to swing them by my DM yet to see if they're ok to play or not (will have to see about them).

oh, I finally hit 100 :D Yea me!

You all can't be forgetting the other alt.classes by Monte too of course.
I've used both the Alternate Sorceror & Bard in the campaigns I run and they have both worked out well. They were only played for a about 2 levels but I still liked the way they worked. Not that I would use them for every setting, but they haven't messed up my game balance as of yet. :)

Just to chime in here, there is not anything in the Monte Ranger Doc to suggest that the ranger does not get the virtual feats of 2 weapon fighting and ambidexterity. But there is also nothing saying they get it either. DM's call I would say.

Aaron.

Hm...perhaps someone should point it out to Monte and ask which is it? As I can imagine that'd be some important info to have.

Well... Generaly, I guess, it's assumed if a class doesn't list a feature, it doesn't have it. I mean, it doesn't specificly state that Rangers don't get sneek attack, but...

25 alt.rangers for your browsing pleasure. It's all been said before, people...
For a very different take on the Ranger, one I still recommend for the Scout archetype, I suggest an alt.Rogue with the Ranger's skill list. With the Rogue's skill points, these Scouts can max out (more of) the skills you expect them to have: Spot, Listen; Hide, Move Silently; Wilderness Lore, Intuit Direction; Climb, Jump, Swim; etc. And the Sneak Attack fits Elven sentries, Goblin scouts, Faramir's men, Indian savages, etc.

If you want to go a step further, you can replace the Rogue's Special Abilities with Bonus Feats (some taken from other classes' Special Abilities' lists): Alertness, Endurance, Improved Critical, Point Blank Shot (Far Shot, Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, Shot on the Run), Quickdraw, Run, Skill Focus (Class Skill), Track, Weapon Focus; Nature Sense, Animal Companion, Woodland Stride, Trackless Step; Sneak Attack, Evasion, Uncanny Dodge.

Thats a pretty good idea, mmadsen... I'd probably give him access to the druids Animal Companion ability, but other than that...
