Somebody had to bring up the Ranger Project

If you are interested, Here's the Ranger Project which has quite a few Variant Rangers.

In the house rules section they seem to be calling the variants "alt.rangers" a lot (along with all the alt.monks, alt.bards, and alt.sorcerers- the last two Monte also has a version of in Book of Eldritch Might II) but you hear both.

Everybody has covered all the other major points. Hope that helps.

It may be me but I can't find the House Rules section in that website.

I think he meant the House Rules section of THIS website, where the term alt.ranger is indeed used often.

I can see that, but even if only 5000 gamers use monte's, I doubt there is one besides that that over 100 use.

Yes, but 5000 gamers is, quite simply, a drop in the gaming bucket. A million or more use the core, and 5000 use Monte's? 5000 or 100 looks about the same at that point.

Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if there was one. The "bloody obvious variant" - one that doesn't need distribution, because it crops up independantly in the minds of DMs and players:

1)Allow a swap - two virtual archery feats for TWP and Ambidex if the player desires, retaining the armor restriction.

2)Modify the Favored Enemy Bonus slightly, so that the player has more choice in allocating the bonus. Rather than "Take new enemy, all old enemies get +1", use something like "Choose a new enemy, you now have X points to distribute among your Enemies (X=1 at 1st, 2 at 5th, 3 at 10th, etc). No two bonuses may be equal, no bonus may be higher than X. Otherwise, distribute as you wish."

vRanger

I have let a player run the monte ranger in my game before. now the only vRanger I allow in my game is found in the PHB and it seems that I'm in the minority to be using it:D
