What's Good in Books?

Glen Cook has written some very interesting military/political/mystery novels, somewhat similar to what George RR Martin has written. If you haven't read Glen Cook before, I'd recommend starting with "The Tower of Fear" (stand alone novel) or "The Black Company" (beginning of 10+ novel series).

I'd also second the Guy G. Kay recommendation. Particularly The Fionvar Tapestry, an excellent 3 book series.

I've read Vance..and while he has his moments...they're far to far apart. I get the impression that a lot of his fame comes from him being something a pioneer in his field.A lot of D&D spells are based on his stuff. Maybe I'll check out the Earthsea series.

That's more or less how I felt about him too.

And, sorry Endur, Glen Cook too.

I would really recommend Neal Stephenson, esp. Cryptonomicon.

And thanks for the correct spelling CCamfield... It's always a problem when you type without looking at the screen. :)

I like the Fionavar series, but Kay fans are pretty mixed about them. So read Tigana first, then the Sarantine Mosaic duology (Kay's most recent work, and his best IMO) if you liked Tigana, and then pick up The Summer Tree if you've decided that you really like Kay.
