I've run 3.x and 4e games for my sons, now ages 10, 8 and 6. In fact, it was in a thread like this that I got a response for Gary Gygax that I now use as my .sig. Sadly, that thread was lost to a server crash, when 6 months or so or posts were lost.
But the advice given so far is pretty much what I heard then, and what I do now. Let them play what they like, in simplified versions if needed. Go with the flow, the rules be damned. If it sounds like fun, let them do it. And don't spend time looking up rules, just wing it. You lose momentum in any game when you stop to read rules, but even moreso with kids.
