I was flipping through my OD&D stuff the other night and saw the 4th level "Create Cloth" spell (might have had a different name). I was thinking "How lame - especially for a 4th-level spell. Man, I'm glad they got rid of this kind of wonkiness over the course of the more recent editions."

I had never looked at "Minor Creation" until today. Add one more "Sacred Cow" to the herd ;)

You just watch it there Akunin. ;)

Shard o' Glass I couldn't disagree more about Summon Monster. the wizard in the game I DM has consistantly used summon monsters to not only give sneak attacks for the rogues but also to add as a 'extra target' for when the PCs are out numbered.

Lets face it when a Kobold is suddenly faced even with a rat that is a big as he is, that kobold is going to attack the the rat first - even if he just moves away (w/o provoking AoO) the kobold has still lost his attack and the rat can attack next round just before it disappears.

Once you can start summoning Dire Crocs - those things are just nasty :D

My vote goes for Foresight. Now, 9th level spells are supposed to be powerful, right? Foresight gives you +2 to AC and +2 to Reflex saves, for 10 minutes/level. It might be more effective to Wish for Magic Vestment or something

I tried to convince the sorcerer I DM that Obscure Object would be a far more exciting addition to his repertoire than Flaming Sphere.

For some reason he didn't go for it.

Gust of Wind - a villain is perched at the top of a windy cliff, jabbering about how he is going to destroy us all. I'll let you fill in the blank. :)
And the villain gets blown off the cliff...

... if he's a pixie. Unfortunately, against Medium-sized opponents, all the Gust of Wind will do is keep the opponent checked for one round, keeping him from advancing toward you for that round. This may give you a slight advantage, but in that situation, I'd much rather summon a small earth elemental and have it bull rush the villain off the cliff. Even if it fails, it'll still be there for four more rounds to smack the villain around...

Gust of Wind. Crap spell that is STILL THIRD LEVEL. WTF?! I have never, EVER, had a mage use it or even memorize it. A 0 level spell if I ever saw one.

I seem to recall a while ago on the board (it may have been on the old boards) someone (I’m afraid I don’t remember who – apologies) mentioning a good use for Gust of Wind. Hit someone with a Disintegrate and (assuming the target fails the save) then follow up with a Gust of Wind to scatter the dust of the target’s remains, preventing raising, resurrection, reincarnation, revivification, resucitation, restoration, whatever the kids are calling it these days.

Kinda nifty.

Not a wiz spell, but.....

I would have to go with the divine paladin spell virtue as the most useless.
