What's the word on Bastion's Airship Book?

John Crichton

First Post
Just saw it at the ENworld store. I had no idea one was even coming out. I know about that one from Goodman Games, but I have been hesitant to pick it up. Anyone heard/seen anything or have a review on the way on the one from Bastion? :)

I just got my copy. Basically, it rocks and will become the standard book for airships in a D20 game. If you have a need for airships, this one's for you.

Cool. Care to elaborate a tad on what you liked? :)

Alright, twist my arm. First off, I'm hardly unbiased since I do so much work for Bastion Press. This is, however, in my opinion, one of the better titles Bastion Press has released.

First of all there isn't a lot of unnecessary filler material. Within the first few pages it launches right into Airship Construction. Page 1 is an index, page 2 is a brief introduction, and page 3 begins the construction section. All the things that you need to know are here: how they are built, who builds them, what materials are used to build them, and engine types. The second half of this chapter includes some very useful information, such as ship templates, navigation, weapons, and so on.

Chapter 2 covers the things you need to know about ship crews. This includes the usual stuff, such as what officers are necessary in a ship crew, what their duties are, and dealing with crew requirements.

Chapters 3 and 4 go naturally together: Movement and Combat. The rules are easy to understand, not overly complex, but definitely have advanced elements such as boarding maneuvers, ramming (including the various possible ramming angles). Then there's special character combat maneuvers. These are special types of attacks characters can make against their enemies which are made possible because of the fact that they are on an airship. An example of this is attacking from the rigging.

The second half of the book includes information on navigation, aerial equipment, aerial trade, skills, feats, prestige classes, magic in the air, and sample ships.

This is the perfect guide for dealing with airships in your campaign. It is also 100% open source (with the exception of the artwork and other graphical elements). This also implies tie-ins with the Oathbound campaign setting, although no knowledge of Oathbound is necessary to use Airships, and it is fully compatible with any setting the DM wants to use it in. It does include an Asherake Sunshadow, which is crewed by the asherake - a race that was first introduced in Minions: Fearsome Foes, and then included as a major race of Oathbound. There are also dwarven and elven ships listed as well.

I haven't figured out what would be needed to use this for Spelljamming yet, but I doubt it would be terribly difficult to make the coversion.

I hope I'll see it at my FLGS soon. I have a real need for a good airships book. Does it mention or include different methods of power (Steam, muscle, something else?), propulsion (Wind, some form of oars, some kind of mechanical props) and bouyancy (Airbags? Helium? Anti-gravity materials?)?

Airships are powered by engines. There are about 10 different types of engines, and each are powered by a different form of "energy." Examples include arcane, fiendish, oil burning, etc. There is certainly room to add your own type of engines.

One of theings I like about this book is that everything is very modular, which gives people the ability to add to the already established components. I'm currently throwing together some new hull types.

There is a thread in the d20 Publishers forum here .

You can download a preview of Airships. If you can call a 36 page, 5.15 Meg pdf a preview that is. :)

It's Good!!

Edit for spelling.
