What's up with Google? (anyone having trouble reaching google.com?)

Happy New Year everyone!

Is anyone else having trouble reaching Google? I keep getting this:

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: Google

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for Google

The dnsserver returned:

Timeout

This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.

I can't get to my Gmail account either, and Google-related sites like blogger.com/blogspot.com lag for awhile but eventually come up.

All I can seem to find on the net when I search (at Yahoo) about this is that Google Chrome recently listed Facebook as a phishing site, and that there is a new Droid virus that is pretty nasty making the rounds.

Anyone else having this problem or know what's up? This has been going on for about a day now for me.

Thanks in advance!

(Edit: Can get into my gmail now, but still not google dot com)

Where are you located? I think this is a regional problem. Google works fine for me, and I searched for "root. phishing-warning-site.com" (which seemed like a very distinctive part of your error) and found that people in West Virginia were having this issue yesterday.

You might want to check with your ISP.

It appears to be related to something messed up between my ISP (Frontier) and Google. I've found a couple of recent posts by people with similar problems around the Web by searching on "phishing-warning-site.com" and "Google" on Yahoo! It appears to be not just in Firefox but IE and Chrome as well. Frontier is aware of the problem but is saying it is a Google issue (and passing the info on to them), and I haven't seen any response from Google.

Now Google's working again for me. I wonder if this was some kind of hacking attempt to "punish" Google Chrome for automatically blocking Facebook as a phishing site this past week?

"Hackers" wouldn't care about Google listing Facebook as a "phishing site" because they know it's true. Also, since Google hasn't dirtied it's hands with Wikileaks there is no reason for "Hackers" to retaliate against google. Of course, Chinese hackers only need government orders.

That said, it's definitely something between your ISP and Google since I'm able to log in from California.

I would guess that, as sometimes happens with these kinds of things, an IP address got listed as a phishing site and the automated response walled of a block of addresses, which in turn triggered another automated blocking, and before you know it, Google.com is unreachable.

The routers and switches and such run by hundreds of ISPs and backbone providers that perform the hard work of ensuring packet delivery around the globe have protection scenarios that can accidentally get out of hand, and sometimes restoring things without opening up holes to actual bad guys can be trickier than you'd expect.
