What's up with Tieflings and Aasamirs

First Post
Let me begin by saying that I do NOT own a MM.

I see their stat adjustments in the DMG, but I don't know anything else about the races.

I also see a lot of people choosing to play characters of these races, and I'm wondering why.

For stats, check the pertinent part of the SRD (note: You'll have to scroll down almost to the end of the page; they're under "Planetouched.").

Well they have elemental resistances, first off. Second since their type is Outsider, they are immune to spells that target humanoids (Charm Person, Hold Person, etc.). Also the stat increases for their race are better than for the core races.

Also, it's cool to roleplay. A paladin is fun, but a paladin descended from a Celestial rocks!

Do they each get the listed feats for free, or do they need to be selected? If they need to be selected, can a player choose not to take the listed feat in the link Darkness provided above?

As outlined in the DMG, they only get feats (and Hit Dice, etc.) by class and level.

But they could of course - just like the example tieflings/aasimars in the MM did - use their feat for 1st level to buy that feat.
