What's wrong with splitting the party?

In my groups, the concern with splitting the party has always been that some of the players are completely out of the game while the GM is dealing with the other group. That said, though, we've always split the party whenever it really made sense to. We've always managed to manage it OK.

These days, I'm much less concerned with the "you're not there" thing. It doesn't bother me for a player to be allowed input when his character isn't present. A player has final say on how he plays his character, but there's nothing wrong with getting advice from other players.
