What's wrong with the big companies?!

I hope someone can explain this to me.

I am working for a big company (about 70000 people). This year the profit is five times as high as last year.

Exactly after making this success public there goes the second announcement: Next year they want to reduce the staff by 32000 people.

IMO our managers must by CE or simply nuts. Or can anyone tell me the logic behind this?

Oh, and of course everyone is told to work more...yeah, now I am motivated.

Well, for one thing, I am not sure if this question will directly lead us into the political field... Me I cannot think of any answer that would not immediately border on politics. My comment will just be : No, they are not going nuts, unfortunately. They just want more money, and reducing the staff will likely do that.

Tell me what company this is, so I can boycott it! :) (After all, I do not live that far from Germany)

I haven't followed things too closely in that space (except for watching who owns my cell provider), but there have been a lot of mergers and acquisitions lately. If your employer just bought/merged with/was bought by another big player, it's quite likely there'd be a lot of redundancy between the companies.

Sadly that isn't the case - "we" rather have a "no new entries" policy since 4 years...also noone has bought "us" and "we" have bought noone.

Ahh, Reveal blew my cover! Well between the articel you are linking to and the stuff I read is one difference though. The 240k people are worldwide, but the number they are going to sack is only inside germany. Also the part I work for is one of the four branches, but is about to loose the half the number of those that are to go. Not a bright future. Meh, glad I bought enough beer for this weekend. :\

That's the spirit! :)

Edit: I don't mean to make light of your situation. I wish you and your fellow coworkers best of luck. Enjoy a beer this weekend, and remind yourself of the good things in life. Good luck!

Warrior Poet, in fact I have had so much beer already - one of my favourite sorts - that I start to enjoy watching Pitch Black. Which I usually don't. :D

I Praise (and blame) "Prinzregent Luitpold Weissbier Hell"!
