What's your earliest memory of d&d?

EARLIEST memory was walking into a Circus World at age 10 and seeing the Moldvay Box Set behind a glass merchandise door, and wanting it because I thought it was some kind of cool new board game.

A few months later I wheedled my relatives (my cousins) into playing the game, and, in an encounter with Green Slime, remember the oldest cousin making a joke about "Green Slime having dinner -- on us" and all of us cracking up. :) I was hooked from then on. Long, long time ago...

In 1980 I got 2 plastic bullywugs and a carrion crawler as a birthday gift. I loved those bullywugs

Mum then went out and bought the red box set to fuel my addiction...

i(though I had to replace the d20, after the Incident).
I'm glad you were able to mostly recover.

I still remember it like it was yesterday - November, 1978. I got off the bus and went home with my cousin David. We were board so he ran me through a quick crawl. Lots of white apes (remember white apes) and their multi-colored cousins. We didn't even have any polyhedrals, just d6. But we made it work, and I got hooked, hard.

I went out and got my first job, selling greeting cards so I could buy stuff, and the year the Easley box set came out, it was one of the options for payment - I got it, and had enough money left over for dice, modules, minis and most of the hard cover books. :)

In 83 or 84 I was asked to do a Champions / superheroes game. At that time I had heard of the rumors of DnD and roleplaying games so I was hesitant to say yes.

in the fall of 88 a friend and comic shop owner handed me a DnD book. Said we play at 7pm on Fridays. Look through the book and watch the game. If its not for me give back the book. If I like it, keep the book (oh and look... I have more).

I showed up. They immediately began making me a human fighter. I died before even being made after failing a save against Ghouls and was caught up in the fact my character (still not fully made) was now attacking my teammates.

The rest is history.

I can remember this but only in bits.

I was at a friends house with the small D&D red books . I had made notes in one and thought the Elf class was cool. I had a friend who was willing to try and he played the Dwarf. I believe the adventure in the book involved a Cave and a Goblin or Kobold?

Anyway we both used the same set of dice and I remember that even in this 'easy fight' he couldnt hit the thing. It did actually kill him. Then he switched to Fighter and sailed through the book adventure.

That particular friend never played again, but he was my first ever pc victim in my first ever rpg.
