In ref. to HoS, utility powers seem too scarce, and, for some classes at least, have too many good choices already, to be the main source of support. Could have certainly used some feats as well (does it have any?).

Shade characters that take Twilight Torch as utility 6 will want the Shadowborn feats that trigger off dim light.

As far as racial support goes, I'm going to say it here: I think what the Nentir Vale needs is a female dragonborn President. And more equal employment opportunities for Shadar-Kai.

Ok, using the compendium, I see that there is one revenant feet. Thats the only one, though this may be part of the policy to make feats less restrictive. There are also the born of shadow feats (the dim light ones) and maybe some others that some HoS races might want to take, but they certainly aren't tied to it.

They're not tied to any race, but the Shadowborn feats (starting with Born of Shadow) trigger off dim light, and shades can take a racial at-will that generates dim light, making them go together like marshmellows and hot cocoa.

No preference; whatever's most appropriate on a case-by-case basis.

For some races, feats are the way to go; for others, the best thing is powers. For still others, it might be Paragon Paths, or something else entirely.

One caveat: I'm not a fan of the way feats are handled in 4e generally - I think they try to cover too much ground. But, in the context of feats as they currently stand in 4e, I have no problem with them being used to support races.

I really like the racial utility powers. They have only one problem: They're directly competing with two other favorites of mine: skill powers and theme/multiclassing utility powers. It's already very difficult to make a choice without adding racial utility powers to the mix.

Spending a couple of feats on racial powers is usually an easier choice, simply because you get a higher number of them. When searching for interesting feats, I first check the racial ones, the class-specific ones, and then the multiclassing feats.

Ideally, there'd be a feat that allows you to pick up a racial power in addition to the utility powers you already get, similar to the skill power feat.

It would for instance be pretty hard to convey something like "dwarves really like to use axes" with a power, but Dwarven Weapon Training does an excellent job at that.

Dwarves Really Like Axes

Growing up as a dwarf, you did everything with an axe; lead added to the haft for writing, sharpening the edge for beard trimming, and even cooking pizza using the axe to put the pie in the oven.

Martial, Stance
Minor Action Personal
Effect: You assume the dwarves really like axes stance. Until the stance ends, you can use any and all axes as if you were proficient with them and you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with axes. If you need to make a skill check and using an axe is part of the equation, you gain a +2 bonus to the skill check.

Special: Dwarves may keep this stance active at the same time as another stance is active.

*Note: non-dwarves who grow up among dwarves can use this stance, but they don't get access to the "special" caveat! :)

OTOH 'drow are expert infiltrators' can easily be pulled off as a racial power option.

Drow Expert Infiltrator

Prerequisite: Drow, Dex 15
Benefit: When you're infiltrating, you gain a +2 bonus to Acrobatics, Stealth and Bluff checks.
