What's your Favorite Kind of Player?

I want players that
a) do not view the game as player vs. DM.

b) Are not powergamers. By powergamer, I mean play only to kill things and take their stuff so that they can get more powerful to kill things and take their stuff, *and* sulk/whine/complain when when the rest of the group wants to focus on interacting with NPCs and doing social encounters/adventures. This style of play is valid. Just not the game that I prefer to play or run.

c) Are flexible and let campaign events dictate how the character develops. Do not pre-plan a build to 20th level and then remain adamant about sticking to the build even when the party has taken the campaign into areas of the setting that do not provide the character access to the necessary trainer or organization. I don't mind preplanning as an excercise, but be flexible if in game events delay or derail the build. Again, preplanning builds and following builds is a valid playstyle, but not the style of play with which I am interested in dealing.

d) understand that just, because they bought a book does not mean that they are entitled to use any portion of it even if the book is by WOTC.

e) do not have to always play either evil characters, one particuliar race (especially bizarre race( and/or class,

f) will interact with NPCs

g) will have their charcters initiate storylines via roleplaying and take the campaign in new directions. Some of the most memorable sessions were not planned ahead by me including:
1) the party on a whim trying to get the uptight Druid "laid"; This actually became a semi frequent subplot that eventually climaxed (pun intended) in the realm of the fey.
2) the party deciding not to follow the villain, but accompany the knight home to report to his king. Once there, the party helped him reclaim his fiancee and family holdings;
3) the party going to the druid's homeland and taking part in his promotion ceremony where they spun tales of his deeds.

h) *try* to play based on character knowledge not player knowledge.

From reading various boards, I am so grateful for my players!

Thankfully, I do. However, several of my friends were introduced to me by other friends in my game.

All the people I game with in both my table top groups are my friends. THat's really all I want out of a player, if they are the type of person I am friends with it makes the gaming that much better.

I like players that bring pizza.

Aside from that, I like players that are imaginitive, willing to push the game beyond their (or my) expectations. The kind of players who will happily throw out the rules and wing it, who prefer plot to rules frippery and think a great game is one where there was no combat whatsoever, and they didn't notice.

Thankfully, that's exactly the group I have now. Lor' bless 'em.

My favorite kind of player is one crying on the floor after his character has been slaughtered.

Seriously, I like players who contribute without dominating the entire table. Also, anyone that appreciates the work that goes into the adventures I write.

Player's who take initiative and who have big ideas are the best. Player's who's characters are truly heroes in that they shape the game world (assuming they don't die).

The kind of player who wants to one day be the DM, or on the other side of the coin, knows the rules and does not want to be DM.

The first tends to want to learn and appreciates the work put into presenting a campaign.
The second knows the work, appreciates it, and works at not being a pain in the butt.

This could easily turn into a rant about what I don't like about certain players. I'm gonna try to keep it positive instead. ;)

I like players that view the game as a story. The ones who don't care if their character gets horribly slaughtered on his second adventure by a kobold that scored a lucky crit, as long as he has a good yarn to spin about it over the counter at the game store. The kind of player who talks about making his character a part of the world- things like trying to find a suitable spouse for his character, find ways to take care of their parents when they get older, build a keep on a wild frontier so the next campaign has a neat new NPC patron.

I like the players that will bring their PHB and dice to the game, that will chip in for new minis for the group, that will bring a twelve pack for the players who drink and leave the leftovers for the host. I really dig the players that know what their spells, feats, and class features do. I like the players that stay on task- they might laugh at a funny moment or joke, but they don't go off on tangents until the game is over. In short, I like the players that make themselves good guests.

I like players who feel that a new splatbook coming out doesn't justify a re-engineering of their character from the ground up.

I like players that have a respect for the material. I like the players that don't try to play snow elf swashbuckler/warlocks in my Ancient Greek setting or katana-wielding half-orc ninja/psions in my Greyhawk game. I like the player that will play a character appropriate to the setting.

The absolute favorite, most awesome player in my book is the one who asks what the group needs the most. The player that's willing to suck it up and play the cleric, the wizard, or the ranger in a party that really needs it. The player who doesn't view this sort of thing as a chore, but as a chance to play something different and push a character type outside the box.
