I was surprised that so many people exclusively played humans, when I did that poll.

The original game was pretty much based on the idea that 90% of the people would be playing human.

Personally, I think that most characters should be human, or it should be noted that the campaign doesn't follow the "standard".

Not that there is anything wrong with that, just my perspective on what qualifies as a "default" or "normal" D&D game.

Human and elf (drow, really). The vast majority of NPC's I make are also human.

I've always wondered, why do subclasses of other races get such different stats, but there is only one human type despite the variations that can exist.

what variations?

Mongol Nomad - resistant to cold, skilled with horses

African Tribesman - resistant to heat, dexterous

that what you're going towards? otherwise the only sub-races I can picture are those with defects I.E. down syndrome, elephantitis, etc.

Elves schmelves.

No surprise here -- I voted "other", for goblin.

I am happy to say that goblins and orcs are fantastic ECL +0 creatures. As a DM, goblins are my favorite Underdark Oppressed Race.

Halflings may not have a -2 hit to Charisma, like goblins do. They may get +1 to all saves. They may get +2 to listen.

But goblins get Mounted Combat (Worgs) as a free feat. And most importantly, they have a 30' movement rate :). Stupid slow-ass halflings.

(Orcs, of course, mow down each and every other ECL +0 class in a second when it comes to fightin'. +4 Str! *drool*)

Me too Goblins are just so much fun

of the standard lot my most played race is gnome - actually its the same gnome 'Orbril' in multiple incarnations - sort of the gnomish equivalent of the Eternal Champion

I am partial to a bit of Orc and Human too

and when and if I can Giant
