Beleive it or not, I've been playing since 89 and have never used a Beholder.

I'm thinking I might this time around.

Up until this point though, most of my mastermind villains have been human.

Humanoids: Sahuagin, Ogres, Merrow, Insectoid Goblins, Gnolls, Hags, Humans

Abberations:Pseudonatural Otyugh, Gibbering Mouthers,

Fey:Pixies

Lots of template use (fiendish, half-fiend, plague-bearing, pseudonatural and half-elemental)

For whatever reason (maybe the slightly cool undead look) I like Black Dragons.

Humans are always a good bet since their motivations vary a great deal. Even someone LG can be a scarey villian when things like Etrhics and moralities with religion are involved.

Vampires. I seem to always fall back on these.

I also enjoy using the Bone template from Vile Deeds a lot.

I started in Dec of 89 and only recently used a beholder for the first time. naaaaasty naaasty nasty things those Beholders are.

One of my favorite BBEGs was a mimic who ran a major thieves' guild.

Another fun bad guy was a dragon who got their claws into the party by offering to shrink and become the sorcerer's familiar. As he put it, "Or would you prefer some small woodland creature?"

In the end, though, my biggest villains tend to be human. Always the easiest to enter society when you're of the same species.

You know, I didn't realize until reading that that mimics were actually intelligent. I mean, on one level, I guess it'd have to be, in order to decide to turn itself into a big, tempting wooden trunk and wait around for someone to reach a tasy hand inside. On the other hand, what the hell kind if sapient creature could bear to hang around all day, pretending to be a damn treasure chest? Surely, anything of human intellect can think of a better way to live.

Yeah, I actually really dig the idea of a mimi running a thieves' guild.

Humans, vampires (and other "intelligent-but-not-liches" undead), sidh/elves, and orc-types are probably my list in order of heavy hitter badguys.
