Known Worlds before it was changed into Mystara.

Too many details have a way of removing the magical mystery of a setting to be explored. I like Forgotten Realms, but it's dropped of my top 3 because of it. Of course then they advanced the timeline and solved a lot of issues, but it wasn't the same setting anymore. A bit of a catch-22 there.

I'd be surprised if anything BUT Forgotten Realms wins this poll, though I it's certainly not in my Top 3.

Every time I've played in the FR, it inevitably ended up one of two things---the DM had to follow "canon" to the letter, or completely ignored it. Kind of tangential, I realize, but really, what's the deal with that?

One reason I only play FR with my face to face group. None of them knows a thing about FR.

I tried it in PBEMs, it was not pretty at all.

As for voting, Dark Sun, Birthright and Greyhawk, in that order.

I would like to say the Neverwinter CS from 4E also. That was one great book.

Oddly enough, the ones I voted for are actually ones I don't run games in. Ravenloft, Al-Qadim and DragonLance. If I run an "official" world, it's usually FR or Greyhawk.

and what is Pelinore? Never heard of that one. Is it a non-TSR/WotC world?

I loved the Realms in 1E and 2E both as a player and DM. I never felt that the canon got in the way of things (although probably because I knew more about the Realms than anyone else I gamed with :) ). I never played or DMed the Realms in 3.x, but I greatly enjoyed reading the products.
