Wheel of Time

It really depends on your reading habits. Since the series isn't finished, you may need to reread the series when the next couple of books come out in order to refresh your memory. Some people don't like doing that. If you don't mind, though, then, by all means, read them. I love the series and only the current book, Crossroads of Twilight, was a big disappointment to me.

I think it is worth it, but only when the series gets finished. I stopped reading it at book 7, and I own all 10 in hardback. I'm going to read them all when he finishes so I can only say how I feel about the first 6.

The first five were a blast, but 6 was week to me. Haven't read 7 to 10, but I own them.

Overall a good series. The first five books are extremely strong. There are some significant (and cool) bits in the last five, but there is at least one book that reads like a DM on sleep deprivation and no plan. I think the last book picked up a bit, though. I think he's moved the story to the point where it'd be really hard to keep momentum from building from here on out.

My wife and her sister are both huge fans. Both have had time to re-read all ten books since the last one was released, too. That may be good or bad, depending on your view.

I'd have to say that the story and the characters are among the absolute best in fantasy literature. The criticisms of the author's lack of drive/timeliness/momentum are valid, though. What Jordan does write, though, is written quite well.

My opinion: the first three books make a nice trilogy and you can stop after that with little fear of missing anything important.

yeah, just don't read the epilog in book 3 and you'll be fine stopping there.

But for me, i've really enjoyed the story, but the last few books have been frustrating, if anything because they take forever to come out and don't actually progress the story too much. However, if you read them all at once, it's much more rewarding, because you don't have the four years gap between them, and the story flows a lot better.

Well worth reading, when the thing is complete.

Wait until he finishes the whole thing and then read from start to finish. Thats my plan.

I have read up through book 9 once and read books 1 through 6 about 3 times. I'm not going to read the series again till he finishes it. Then I'll read all the way through.

Book 6 is my personal favorite. I feel it has one of the strongest and most climactic endings.

I definitely think the series is worth it, but wait until Jordan finishes before reading it all the way through.

I'd say read it, and form your own opinion. People mention thw WoT in internet discussions about both good and bad fantasy series, so that's why I think people should try it and form their own opinions.

I personally like it. Jordan does a pretty good job of biuling both a world and characters. He describes several major cities and nations, as well as many small villages and towns, and they all seem fairly unique. The main characters too are generally well developed with distinct personalities and motivations; the minor character can come off as cardboard, but that's not really much of a quibble since they're supporting characters anyway.

However, the later books are weaker than the earlier ones. The first 6 come off pretty strong, Jordan clearly had the plots for them envisioned before he wrote them, and he knew what he wanted to do with each of them. That's not true with the later books. There are parts of them that feel very sketchy, somewhat rushed, and aren't as fully developed. I think that Jordan does know over the long run how these plots end, but it's the details he hasn't figured out. And think he's a bit burned out as well; I think he made the series far too long, and it's hurt the creative process.

Another caution on the series. The Prologue of the first book, as well as maybe the first chapter, is a bit boring. Lots of good, important info, and very much worth wading through to get to the story. Just be willing to read 20-30 pages on faith.

I tried three or four times to make it through. Finally, I was bed-ridden for a week and by Wednesday morning, I had nothing better to do. By Wednesday evening, you couldn't have pried the book out of my hands.

Off topic...

Heh, reminds me ... about 2-1/2 years ago, I ordered a copy of the next GRRM Song of Fire and Ice book (Feast for Crows) for a friend for his birthday, with the assumption that it might not be out right away but it would be out probably by that fall. So my friend spent that summer re-reading the first three books of the series to get ready for it. And now it's 2004 with no book in sight. I've "given" that same gift to him each year on his birthday since then. It really is the gift that keeps on giving. :)
