When bad minis turn good ...

It is posts like this that made me wish I could afford to buy minis. :(
I can't speak for myself since i am a very bad about hoarding minis of all kinds, but i am confident you might find someone inthe trading forum might be able to give you a deal on common figs and such.

Check dollar stores and garage sales for a lot of dire animals and giants.

Exactly this thing happened to me with the Mad Slashers. I looked at them and said "hm". Then I needed some spiders for my game, grabbed those, and wound up turning them into an ad hoc monster that creeped out my players!
I wish i had more mad slashers, hey are dead ringers for Legend of Zelda Tektites.

I got 10 wrackspawn that will be deployed as Magic the Gathering Thrulls.

I like giants huge, so Fomorians are my hill giants and cloud are my frost giants. If i get a few more Nightwalkers i might custom a few giants from those and action figure bits.

large Air elementals make beter large fire elementals.

Fiendish dire wolverines make good mounts for humaniods. So do winter wolves.

As it happens hobgoblin impalers make good riders along with carrion tribe barbarians.

I've also used my D&D minis to play Blood Bowl on several occasions. I had a warforged team and a Nergalite team, with Ibixians as Beastmen, Wrackspawn as Plaguebearers, Mongrelfolk as... whatever the little guys were. Stricken Ones, or something along those lines. I used a silver permanent marker to mark the bases. That was pretty successful, actually.

Ibixians as Beastmen
Uhm, People actually call them Ibixian? Everyone i know calls them goat demons or beastmen depending if they favor Diablo or Warhammer.

I am greatful for the large uncommon Kroxigors er, blackscale lizardfolk in Angelfire. Poison dusk lizardfolk are also dead ringers for Skinks.
