Oops. I checked the wrong box because I didn't scroll down and read your initial post thoroughly.
I started playing D&D in about 1998. We played 2E for a couple of years before 3E was released. Our 2E campaign continued for a while after all the others had switched to 3E because the GM was reluctant to give up all the materials he'd accumulated over the years.
But I'm an anomaly because I'm older than most of the people on these boards and didn't begin roleplaying in anything like the 'usual' way. I was over 30 and didn't start with D&D. I've never played D&D with fellow students, siblings, or at my local game store.
