When do Outsiders actually DIE (for real)

We do it the old way, when an outsider dies on any plane other than its home plane, it is banished back to its home plane for 100 years.

Of course, this does not apply to native outsiders.

Hello,

Here is my interpretation about outsider who die.

An outsider is a soul who have grow in a outer plane after his mortal life. For exemple a very evil man who die, go to the abyss and then after hundred of years in the abyss he became a lower demon and can climb the hierarchy with time.

When you kill an outsider on the prime material plane (in the real world) his soul go back to his plane.

I think that after he die on the prime material he have to wait another couple of hundred of years before he could take a demon form again and be summoned or go back in the prime material.

I use these thinking in my campaign world, this very logical and this help a lot to don't see the same demon bother the players again and again and again.

Then the only thing you can do to trully kill a demon, is to kill him directly in his born plane or he'll live again after a couple of hundred years. So if you want to defeat asmodeus, you have to visit the nine layers of hell (baator) and defeat him... Good Luck !

I also forgot to mention that outsiders are banished after being sent back from the material plane. It takes them a certain amount of time depending on what they are to get back. The only way for them to prematurely return is if the person that banished them freely allows them to come to the material plane. i.e. summoning, a portal, etc. A dempn or devil is banished for a century, the same with angels. Demigods and deities if ever but rarely banished spend a week to a month.

I like people's House Rules, I really do, but it would be kind if you would qualify that you are talking about House Rules when you explain, just for the sake of the OP and the people who have gone into detail about how the RAW defines it.

RAW: Outsiders who are called (planar ally, gate, etc) or travel physically to the Material and slain die permanently (barring certain spells that bring them back), just like anyone else. Any summoned creature goes back where it came from after being slain, including all those Magical Beasts, Animals, and Outsiders with summon spells and the demon and devil's summoning abilities.

In my campaign, I make slain Outsiders' "soul" (which is their very being) eventually reemerge on their plane of origin. High ranking fiends might be permitted to keep their station and memories/abilities, although many have their personalities destroyed and are reformed, hopefully this time serving their masters better. This process takes 101 days, and the corpse stays behind for a while, though it rots more quickly than most corpses, leaving the area around where it died desecrated.
