When is a Shuriken not a Shuriken?

I may be wrong, but I believe "shuri ken" means "flying sword", or somesuch. "Sicintare" was the translation used in one of Asprin's Thieves' World books, where it was translated "flying knives" (plural Sicintares). They were critters, though! "Ikashan" was the name in a MERP product (plural ikashani).

Shuriken is made up of three kanji. Shu-ri-ken. Ken means sword, yes. The Shuri, I think, more or less means 'In the hand or palm'. I could be wrong, though.

I like shurikens but the name grates on me when I consider their use in non-Japanese areas, or in worlds that don't have an equivilant oriental area.

Any other ideas?
