When it is time to shut up (RttToEE spoilers)

Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil spoilers ahead ...

So we just finished the fight at the air temple this weekend. We were able to take the priest out. However when the air elemental appeared all but one of us failed the reflex save. So a little thief with a +1 crossbow has to take out the air elemental. Uh oh. We survived, but only barely. The elemental ran out of steam and dropped us to the ground whereupon the fighters immediately whupped it.

The next day I ponted out to the DM that he had made a mistake and that he forgot to give us reflex saves every round to get out of the whirlwind. I thought I was being pretty clever in pointing that out. He responded: "Well, if you want to get technical about it what I should have done was have the air elemental use it's 100' move and dump you all in the middle of crater lake."

Yeah. Um. Time for me to shut up now.

Never taunt a DM with the rules.

so is that a grapple?

and can the air elemental break the grapple and dump you without you doing something?

cool story.

I've had a couple of players do that to me. It's fun to watch them realize I could have done a lot more evil.

While I agree with this sentiment I differentiate between pointing out that a rule was not handled properly and pointing out that a certain tactic was not employed. These are two different things.

Last night, I had a player's character at 0 hps and being grappled by a Mimic. The wizard lets loose with a circlet of blasting and roles a hit on the mimic. The other player (meat-boy) pipes up and asks, "So, she's got a 25% chance of hitting me, right?"

The only response that came to mind was, "Well, since you're requesting it, yes, she does. [Wizard] roll your chance." Every other time the circumstance came up, I'd called for the roll, so it was conspicuously missing from this attack. I took it as a request to not be nice to his character. He still got lucky, though.

It's a supernatural abilty called "whirlwind". It's not a grapple. I solidly suggest it for all your summoning needs. Fantastic crowd control.

Incidentally, it's been pointed out to me that not only did I mess up the rule when "correcting" the DM (oops) but that he would have changed the critter's tactics in some spiteful fashion. He wouldn't have. He's a nice guy who puts a lot of time and effort into the game.

I hope that my post did not imply that I thought he was spiteful. I was only trying to suggest that if that was indeed his response then I don't necessarily feel that it was a parallel to your pointing out a misapplied rule.

I think your DM just wanted you to know that What's done is done.

But most of the time the DM forgot about the abilities and full potential of monster, sometimes he do willingly to make you survive when you're gonna die.

Yeah, Air Elementals are great at grappling. Biggus, per your first post about taunting the DM, I sorta agree with the DMs assesment. In my game, I play pretty loose with the rules as the one thing I hate more than anything else is stopping the game for 10s of minutes to debate a rule. My view is that I get to make ad hoc rulings (or mistakes  ) to keep the game going and we can always change the rule later. If a player wants to get all technical on me then I will be forced to nitpick and do more dastardly things to the PCs to demonstrate my AUTHORITY! ;)

You were right to point the DM's forgetfulness, but if he intentionally forgot, I would say that the encounter worked itself out as it was probably very exciting for the PCs.

Hello,

Well you're right, the only point to the encounter is to make it exciting. If the PC almost die this enought :) there is no fun to kill them all, this better to make them suffer piece by piece and then you can kill them in the final of return to the temple elemental evil :)
