When the rules can go hang...

It's probably worth mentioning that I'd recently read Monte Cook's recent DM's Only column about the role of rules - I suspect I would have ruled the same regardless, but Monte's reinforcement of the principle probably helped.

Cheers!

Firstly, great scene, and I'm sure everyone would have loved it. However ...

I would have thought that running an RPGA game required you to ahere to the rules full stop.

The reason I mention this is ... what if he had criticaled, maxed out the damage roll, and somehow killed the creature with the attack (perhaps from massive damage or something)? Then your ignoring of the rules has just given the party a kill that would have been hard fought otherwise.

If it were not an RPGA game then do whatever the hell you want as the DM is my motto and creed, however are you not required to know and apply the rules as written?

If I am wrong then please ignore this post.

As for Thorpe being an adjective in Australia ... depends on who you are actually ... he's pretty much a swear word amongst certain circles I know.

If you're in a public RPGA game with people you don't know, you should keep to the rules as much as possible.

However, the object of the RPGA is to promote roleplaying, and the best way to do that is to make the game fun! Now, for many people you do that by following the rules, but I knew the group very well, so there was no problem there.

This was a home game, not a game day, btw.

Cheerse!
