When was the last time mounts/mounted combat saw a use?

Since one of my PCs is a Talenta halfling Barbarian/Wilderness Rogue with the Wild Cohort feat and aiming at Beastmaster, every single session sees mounted action. The warforged Fighter/soon-Artificer/then-Spellcarved Soldier is saving to buy a construct warhorse around 6th level.

I plan on buying Red Hand of DOOOOOM!!!, and I hear there quite a bit of Mounted COmbat-friendly situations there.

Several times in my current Red Hand of Doom campaign. One of the starting characters is a mounted fighter and goblin warg riders are sprinkled in, too.

Actually, the Soviets under Zhukov used cavalry against the German panzers later in the war and did pretty well with them. :) Of course, they supported them with planes, favorable terrain, decent anti-tank weapons, etc.

true. but i was thinking about a stand alone force.

Last game, actually. Goblins on worgs. I didn't feel like I was doing it right, or especially effectively. Would love a detailed example of how it works if such exists somewhere.

I'd also go on to mention the 'Polish Cav charging panzers' story is a bit of myth.

"Contrary to German and Italian propaganda, Polish cavalry brigades never charged tanks with their sabres or lances as they were equipped with anti-tank weapons such as 37mm Bofors wz.36 (exported to UK as Ordnance Q.F. 37mm Mk I) anti-tank guns, that could penetrate 26mm armour at 600m at 30 degrees. The cavalry brigades were in the process of being reorganized into motorized brigades". Another weapon was anti-tank rifle model 1935 (karabin przeciwpancerny wz. 35). Its calibre was 7.92 mm and it could penetrate 15mm armour at 300m at 30 degrees.

In fact, they stopped issuing the lance as a weapon in 1935 (Although it was allowed to still be used). What happened was the Cav unit spotted an unprepared german infantry unit and charged them with sabers, taking very few casualties. Unfortunately, while they were reforming, a german armored car unit with machine guns happened upon them and the cav unit took significant losses before they could find cover. German and Italian propoganda took it from there. They did NOT charge tanks with lances drawn, and the Polish Cav units actually had a pretty good record.

yup. the polish cavalry had weapons of the era. just like any modern day cavalry does... think Apocalypse Now. ;)

I guess it depends on the campaign. In the game I DM, practically never. In the game in which I am playing one of the PCs, the very often. Almost every session. Why? Because the GM created the campaign in which mounted combat was very frequent.

Before this year, not very often. In current campaigns, it has come up more often. I'm playing a ranger with a light war horse as companion and have taken some mounted combat feats -- the DM is kind enough to oblige with at least some outdoor encounters. We also have a halfling druid mounted on her dog/animal companion. I'm also DMing an eberron campaign, we only had one mounted combat/horse chase, and it did not end well for some of the horses (fireball is just nasty against standard riding horses :)) -- howver, I could see it coming up more often than in past campaigns.
