Where does one find stronghold rules in TSR/WOTC products?

First Post
I’ve got the rules from the Companion and Master sets, and I’ve got the ‘affiliation’ rules from the 3.5e PHB2, which can be adapted for strongholds. But what other official stuff is out there? Do the AD&D 1e and/or 2e DMGs have rules for strongholds? Are there any splat books (in any edition) dealing with strongholds or easily adaptable for this purpose?

I’d rather stay away from non-D&D and d20 3rd party stuff, but if you think there is something in this category that is A) really excellent and B) SIMPLE (i.e. definitely not complex and/or highly detailed), then please feel free to suggest it.

Cheers,

There's always been some kind of stronghold rules in D&D, since the very beginning.
- OD&D Vol. 3 (Underworld & Wilderness), p. 21.
- 1E AD&D DMG, p. 107.

Cheers Delta. Does the 1e DMG give any mechanics for running/building a stronghold, or just for how many followers you get and how much you have to pay various employees?

The 1e DMG gives building and basic siege rules.

The 2nd ed Castle Guide (probably avaliable as a pdf somewhere) gives an expanded version of these rules. In fact, the "crunch" side of that book is pretty good. The "fluff" is your typical 2nd edition blather.

"Stronghold Builders Guidebook" was one of my least favorite 3.0 books. I didn't think it gave nearly enough intereting material for building a stronghold, and priced things way of of my league for the campaign I was playing at the time. I wish some 3rd party vendor would do it better.

There was also an issue of Dragon that had an article about building strongholds... It had prices for various parts and such.. (like walls and doors and gates...)

I don't remember the issue, but I think it had a picture of a falcon on it... :p (sorry I know thats not much help...)

Oh, also for 3e check out Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe... Not really a "rules" book, but one of my favorites for how stuff was...
