Where was that? - Help

I'm old enough to have people kid me about the onset of senility, but really I've never had a great memory. The info is often there, but its not well indexed.

Today, I'm remembering that I saw an adventure that I'd like to try and integrate into a campaign world I'm perenially working on. It involved a kidnapping which leads the party into an area controlled by some relatively sophisticated and organized Orcs. One distinctive feature of the adventure was that the orc warriors carry swords (or maybe scimitars) made of a black, non-metalic substance, which function as masterwork weapons and are treted as special treasures by the orc tribe. A non-orc having or using such a weapon would be assumed to have killed its rightful owner, and thus would be the object of immediate hostility from any other of these orcs.

I can't recall if I saw this as a published adventure during a trip to the local game shop or if it was one of the EN World contest entries, or something else. I've tried going through the lists on this site and I've looked at all of WotC's freebies, but I haven't seen it. (Note: I didn't say its not there; just that I haven't recognized it if it is.) If anyone knows what this adventure is or where it might be available, I'd appreciate the help.

TIA and Ciao!

Dead of Winter

I think you are refering to The Dead of Winter. It's an adventure by Wizards and I think they put it on the cd that came with the PHB for 3e. I'm not sure if it can be found online. Hope that helps.

Direct hit - thanks

You were exactly right. It was among the extras on the Character Generator CD, and indicated (on the CD menu) that it was the first 3.0 adventure from Dungeon magazine. Anyone looking for it without access to the CD could try back issues of Dungeon from around that time.

Side note: I had to open the file from Adobe Acrobat Reader, because the CD kept trying to run its CG program rather than showing its files to the Windows explorer. And if you print it, the page numbering doesn't agree with the numbers of the pages on screen.

Roll on! :D
