Wherefore art thou, otyugh?

I had the toy that the Rust Monster was based on when I was a kid.

I seem to remember the rest of the pack being more-or-less normal dinosaurs (a pterodactyl and a brontosaurus spring to mind), but there was this weird one with mandibles, that looked a little like a Gelugon (Ice Devil)...

Was the basis for the umber hulk, IIRC.

The White Thing, Right. I thought of it more as a White Dragon.

There was also some sort of Upright Dino with Spikes along either side of its head & a Spiked Mace-Like Tail.

Also had a Brown, Kangaroo-Like thing with Mouse-Like Ears & 2 rows of spikes running down its back. The tail bent at a wierd 90 Angle.

I think the Land-Shark was also in that set.

Just moving house over this week, I came accross my rust monster toy (please forgive the crappy phone-camera photo):

I know that the otyugh is from 1E--I used it more than once, back in the day. But does anyone know specifically when it first appeared? Which product and, more importantly, the date that product was published?

I have a vague theory about the inspiration for the otyugh being the dianoga from the trash compactor in Star Wars, and I'd like to know if the chronology holds. :)

I would say the ultra geek card has already been played for actually knowing the name of the trash compactor monster. :)
