Which Campaign Setting has the best fluff? Why?

Hmmm...now I've read Mystara so many times...made me think why it didn't strike me to add it to my list. Probably because the flavour is not the "best", but in many points the most hilarious and fun-filled. I just have to think about Ierendi and "Fantasy Island"

It's kind of strange that so many people like PS but it's not good enough to have it's own official 3e setting.

I hear you there. I didn't bother mentioning it my post for exactly that reason, but I love it. I think I own all the books and boxed sets for the setting. I think Eberron is the best 'official' setting by WOTC/TSR since PS, but Planescape is still the best.

Of all fantasy role playing games: Glorantha (RuneQuest, HeroWars, HeroQuest).

Of "classic" D&D: I love Ghostwalk and Eberron for their flavour, precisely. Greyhawk is just behind.

Of "original yet official" D&D: Spelljammer and Planescape. I had some of my best AD&D games of all time with Spelljammer. It truly rocks.

Of OGL stuff: The Diamond Throne (Arcana Evolved), hands down. Ravenloft is just behind.

Hi,

Another vote for Planescape -- I don't think there are any RPG supplements that are more enjoyable and entertaining to read. Runners-up: Forgotten Realms, Al-Qadim and Harn.

Cheers

Oathbound is the setting that has most captured my imagination. The stack of adventures I have on my shelves, with little sticky notes and tabs, can finally find a home. As others have mentioned, the setting itself is detailed, original, and includes an "adventure path" edition in each supplement, but there is still room to add or subtract whatever you like. The world is made for adventurers, both in the literal and meta-sense. Most of the types of campaign you might like can be found in the Domains of the Forge.

Plus, it is the first setting that I have been able to sit and read cover-to-cover. The campaign book and supplements are well written and inspire me. The first novel is a good read and captures the feel of the setting too.

Eberron is a candidate as well. I like what is being done, but may have to see more before it gets up to the status of Oathbound. Plus, I have not been impressed by what I have seen of the adventures. I'll try the first novel and see what that does for me.

Midnight for me. I like it so much I am running a Midnight campaign. As mentioned earlier, Fury of Shadow (Midnight boxed set) is full of delicious fluff! :D

I have to say I love this thread. Very informative on many settings I have not read and now I probably will have to go out and buy some of them.

Suprisingly few votes for Ravenloft. And sadly no votes for Masque of the Red Death. I think it was the lack of supplements which hurt that setting. And yes, count me among the Al-Qadim fans as well. And there'll always be a place in my heart for Planescape, BERK!
