My indecisiveness has reached unprecedented levels, this time. I'm so deadlocked as to which character I want to play in an upcoming Rifts game that I can't decide between the two. At the end of the day, this poll by itself probably won't decide it, either. I'll probably also end up flipping a coin 100 different times, roll dice, play War, and pluck the leaves from flowers to help me decide. I'll take notes of all the results, and then I'll collate them all together to help me decide which character to play. So which should I play? NOTE: This is taking place after Erin Tarn disappeared in Mexico, so the timeline is set before Dimension Book 1: Wormwood. Pretty much in the early days of the Rifts setting.

CHOICE #1

Demigod Mutant

An angelic being who travels the wastelands of Rifts Earth, preaching to the people The Word of God as he heals the sick and destroys the demonic. He's also preparing to meet the coming of the 4 different Apocalypses, which he has seen in frightening visions.

CHOICE #2

Human Experiment

An experiment in creating a Super-Soldier from before the Time of the Rifts. He was placed in suspended animation and was only awoken recently. He's horrified at the shape of the world, as well as the destruction of his nation. Now he seeks to rebuild America on Rifts Earth. To create a free society not just for humans, but for non-humans as well. Fighting for Truth, Justice, and the American Way on Rifts Earth.

I like both ideas a WHOLE lot, but of course, I can only play one. Thing is, depending on the opposition, my choice of which to play would vary.

For instance, against vampires, demons, the New Phoenix Empire, and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, I'd love to play the angel. Plus the idea of a preacher walking the Earth like Quai Chang Caine is just appealing.

But against the Mechanoids, the Coalition, the Xiticix I want to play the super-soldier. That and a meeting between this character and the Megaversal Legion, the New Navy, and/or Freedom Station would be interesting.

So your verdict, ladies and gentlemen? Angel or Super-Soldier?

Behave, now.

Personally, I've never even read Rifts, so I dunno what the two choices mean.

To sum up, Rifts is a post-apocalyptic Earth in which magic and super-science meet. You've got dragons and wizards, along with men in power armor and shooting laser guns. You even have a mix of the two, with a school of magic called "Techno-Wizardry", which mixes magic and science. And on top of that, there're the Rifts, which're portals all over the Earth linking it to other dimensions, and it's through them that other races and monsters pour through.

As far as your choices go, I think the Super-Human would be the most compelling, especially if could use an option from the Rifts Conversion Book 1 to make a super-being with powers from Heroes Unlimited. In my experience, the super powers stack up pretty well in the Rifts world, so you wouldn't especially outshine someone, nor would you be a completely useless character.

I'll take an opprotunity to add my own suggestion:

As far as Rifts goes, my personal favorite OCC happens to be from the New West World Book. It's the Gunfighter. You get a ton of sharpshooting skills, so that with a high PP means that you will be great in combat, and other skills that are good outside of combat. They're pretty well-rounded for a Rifts OCC. You could try that out with your GM's approval, and if he has the book. I think it would be worth it.

GLITTERBOY! ;)

Dougal

btw. I'd go for the Mutant Angel, sounds fun...

Funny Glitter Boy story.

I once played a game with a Glitter Boy in a party. We ambushed some Coalition Skelebots in the woods, splitting into two groups in order to surround the Skelebots. The first group consisted of the Glitter Boy, while the second group consisted of everyone else (It was a Glitter Boy. It didn't NEED anyone else on his side).

Unfortunately, we very stupidly positioned ourselves directly opposite of each other. Anyone remember that great scene from the Robert DeNiro movie "Ronin" where he ambushes Sean Bean's character with a cup of coffee? Unfortunately, none of us had seen that movie beforehand.

Anyway, so we're opposite each other, firing away at the Skelebots. It isn't long before someone misses and the DM has him rolling percentile dice to see if he hits a party member. Surprise, surprise, it was the Glitter Boy who missed. And yes, he made the percentile roll. The Millennium Druid got hit flat in the chest with a Boom Gun blast. Guy looked good as dead, as his Bark armor only had 60 MDC, while the Boom Gun does 3D6x10. So the Glitter Boy player rolls for damage...

1...

2...

...and 3!

60 MDC exactly! That Druid survived by the SKIN OF HIS TEETH, though his Bark armor got blown right off his back. Suffice to say, we all got out of the Glitter Boy's line of fire after that...
