Since everyone has run the "weakest" route, I thought I would run the opposite. Presume everyone knows that each class has different strengths and weaknesses based on the class's theme. A fighter vs. a wizard is a crap shoot, as is a cleric vs. a barbarian. The answer seems easy, but a clever cleric can beat the barbarian. Don't exclude combat from your thinking, but don't limit your reply to pure combat.

All around, the Cleric. Heavy armor, decent weapons, ability to turn/destroy undead, versatile (if less powerful than wizard/sorcerer) spell list, plus the being best healer, makes the Cleric, perhaps not the most powerful, but certainly the backbone of any party.

Probably Cleric, depending on the domains, maybe Wizard. Because of information gathering and the ability to gain the upper hand in many encounters, and to get out of those you don't want to be in.

Cleric, obviously. This becomes especially obvious if you have more than 1 Cleric in the same PC group, so that they have more slots free for non-healing uses.

Wow...the cleric gets more votes than all the other classes put together...

That's probably a fair comment. Throughout the majority of levels, the cleric has the best combination of durability, offensive and defensive capabilities, and the healing is a must. There is no other demand to have any other single class, but a frequent cry is "Who will be the cleric?"- strangely, the druid, the only other primary healing class, is totally eclipsed.

The exceptions might be a melee brute at the lower levels, and an arcane caster at the very high levels: Prismatic Sphere and Time Stop are hard to trump, but for the bulk of most levels, the cleric is the strongest all-round class.

re

I really need to try a battle cleric sometime and see what all the hoopla is about. I keep hearing clerics are the strongest, but in the games we play the arcane caster is usually the strongest. Strongest meaning the class with the most versatility, survivability, and lethality.

Which character is the strongest?

The one with the highest Strength score, obviously. And, with buffing spells, it's not always so easy to know who that will be.

:)

But seriously, I think the question needs to be picked apart for a few days. What's meant here? Do you mean "In a fight between an X and a Y, who could win?" or do you mean "When fighting enemies, who is better at defeating them, an X or a Y?" or do you mean "If you were in a group with other players and a new player joined, and you already had all the basic bases covered, what additional character would you want?" or do you mean something else?

I'm not sure what "strongest" character is supposed to mean.
