Oh stop being melodramatic. Of course 4e fans tastes count. But the $ in everyone else's wallet just counts more.

It’s also nonsense. If the only opinions that counted were those who didn’t like the warlord abilities, then 5e wouldn’t have any non magical healing like hit dice, or feats like inspiring leader.

Aspects of every edition are found in 5e.

You realize that they’ve never actually included warlords as a polling option right? The 70% cutoff doesn’t really apply when they won’t even bring it up.

Mostly imo out of fear of reopening edition war era crap. Those that constantly decried the warlord should stand proud. They made good and sure that their tastes are the only ones that count.

Wouldn't be surprised if they asked about it during the playtest. I played a Warlord in 4E and I enjoyed it: just don't see much of a need for it in 5E, mechanically or narratively.

5E already has a Warlord - light subclass in the Battle Master, but a sub class doesn't have enough 'power space' to cover all the bits a Warlord should be able to do. Personally I don't care too much if there is a Warlord or not, but there is def design space, narrative space and public desire for one. It's just odd that WotC haven't bitten the bullet and put one in.
They did, in SCAG.

Heh. The funny thing is, all the mechanics for a warlord exist in 5e. All of them. Just not in a single class.

It’s all about the branding. All the strum und drang about warlords is just that. The mechanics are all right there.

But come hell or high water we absolutely must make sure that the name warlord never appears in 5e.

Funny how people hate warlords but have no problems with warlord mechanics appearing in the game. Almost like the whole warlord issue was just a stalking horse for edition warring.

@Hussar

If you got all the nonmagical abilities for Warlord class, but didnt call it a ‘warlord’, what would you call it?

The closest reallife example is probably coach or swordfighting tutor.

Actually, ‘Tactician’ is a pretty good name for a warlord class. It would include people like Alexander the Great leading from the front, and various military generals leading from behind.

Off topic, but I would be interested in how folks here would make their own Warlord using existing mechanics
Are we talking Battlemaster, Bard, Mastermind with Inspiring Leader? I'm sure some of you must have done it.

My other question would be: Did it work like you wanted, or was it too much to put together?

Why wouldn’t I call it a warlord? I don’t have any issues with the name.

Genre fiction is repleat with examples of the archetype, but again it’s become the class that must not be named.

Look at this thread as a perfect example. Several classes get mentioned first, all with little or no comment. As soon as warlord is mentioned, it’s “well just use a fighter/valour bard”.

To be fair I’m being melodramatic for a bit of humour, but there’s a fair degree of bitterness there as well.
