Which D&D edition do you *really* prefer?

4e for DMing reasons, by far.

Unfortunately, the lack of support suited to my appetites keeps me checking out the Paizo site if just to see what they're cooking up. I think I prefer Pathfinder-level support, not anything involving the rules. If 4e had that, I'd be too busy playing to post in this thread.

Also, I began with 2e, and that will always have a sort of golden, childhood glow about it.

1e. It has a sensibility that just feels right to me. I like how the seam between D&D as a wargame and D&D as a roleplaying game is still evident. I like how it requires a DM with a firm hand to run well. It's impressive how focused it is as a game without feeling sterile or over-analyzed. I love how it's written with the sort of verve and confidence that the (co)creator of D&D would have, writing about the game. And it has by far the coolest magic item section.

That said, what I really mean is AD&D with a background in Basic/BECMI D&D to fill in the blanks. i.e. when you say to yourself, as a 1e DM often should, "this rule seems pointlessly complex, I don't feel like using it right now" -- being able to fall back to the simpler Basic/BECMI procedure is very useful.

Over on dragonsfoot the other day a poster brought up the fact that it's never actually explained in 1e how often to roll for wandering monsters. That really made me realize how much more confusing 1e would be for me if I hadn't played Basic first.

I don't know, I go back and forth between various editions; what has been constant at least since I restarted rpging in 2000 is that I prefer D&D to other RPGs. In terms of the games I play regularly my current favourites would be 4e, BX/Labyrinth Lord, 1e AD&D/OSRIC, 3e/Pathfinder, and some online Mutant Future, in roughly that order. But the games I have played most in my life are 1e AD&D and 3e D&D, the 3e games used a 3.5 PHB 2003 on.

Back in our BECMI days, we played Big Damn Heroes, pretty much like I do now with 4e. And 4e is just about perfect for me when it comes to playing like that. But of late, I've started feel like doing some old-timey dungeon exploration with B/X or BECMI. Mapper, Caller, passages, secret doors, all that kind of thing.
