I don't know if anyone's run this poll before, but I'm very curious.

I started with Basic D&D. Then moved onto 1E, then 2E, and now 3E. :)

The "first" basic set.

I'm weird...I started with 2nd Ed, but have since played either 1st ed or OD&D, not sure which (it was a while ago and I've got a bad memory, okay?), and 3e and 3.5e...

I started in 1981 with the 1980 Basic Box set with the Errol Otus cover art, edited by Moldvay. I then went on to AD&D, quit around 1986, then picked up 1E and 3E in 2001 (or was it 2002?)

Thanks for the pic!

I love seeing that old art.

Yeah, I didn't break Basic D&D down into its various iterations because these weren't as *conspicuous* as the release of 1E and 2E AD&D and then 3E D&D. In other words, Basic D&D was never "branded" as a new edition when it was upgraded. The best you might have got was a new cover design and a mention of the edition on the inside cover.

My first D&D was the red Basic Set.

My first RPG, on the other hand, was Alexander Scott's Maelstrom, which I got for my 10th birthday.

Someone voted for "Gary's hand-written draft for OD&D, circa 1973".

Do you still have that manuscript? It'd be worth a whole bunch of golden EGGs! :p
