I started using some books that looked like this one, but they were a darker red and the artwork was worse. They were no more than 32-64 pages in length. We had about 6 modules, a basic set of rules, and a set of rules for really high level characters, but none of the content from in between. I'm guessing because we were missing certain books that were part of a boxed set. Most of the monsters didn't have illustrations, just stats, and poison was the big killer.

I'm not sure what it was exactly. I assume a basic set for some edition, probably OD&D or 1e. We played with those rules for about 6 months before we bought a 3.0 players handbook. About 6 months after playing around with JUST that, I bought myself a monster manual and dungeon master's guide.

Yeah, I didn't break Basic D&D down into its various iterations because these weren't as *conspicuous* as the release of 1E and 2E AD&D and then 3E D&D.

That choice is likely to bias your poll pretty heavily in favor of "Basic" since there was a "Basic" D&D of one sort or another in print from 1977 through 1999; much longer than any other version of the game.

And mine was the 1981 Moldvay Basic set. :)

I started with 2nd Edition in 1987. Beginner's luck I guess. ;)

As it had just come out my whole group of middle school/high school friends just took it as normal D&D. None of us knew anyone else who played. And the current climate didn't exactly make it easy to find others.

We knew about BD&D, but it was called basic. And we were 13. Far too old for some "kid" game.

I started with the original Basic Set. I wanted to start with AD&D. Unfortunately, at that time the only book out was the Monster Manual. The Player's Handbook was a month or so away and the Dungeon Master's Guide was about a year away.

Sorry. :o

I'm actually not that knowledgable on the various Basic D&D editions.

Could you please list them?

We have . . .

1981 Moldvay

19?? Mentzer (Red box)

19?? Rules Cyclopedia hardcover

What else?
