I'm genuinely surprised to see more people here started with 2E than with 1E, and that Basic is by far the greatest source of players that end up on ENWorld.
After previous polls showing twentysomethings are the largeset demographic here, why would you be surprised that more of us started with 2e than 1e? It's just what was available (new) when we started gaming.

I started early this year with 3.5E. Before that, I had learned most of the d20 system rules from the Revised Edition of the Star Wars RPG.

Man, I feel so much like a newbie around here.

I started with a pc game that ran on the revised 2ed, so I know some thac0 but most was done on the computer. But my real starting game was 3rd ed, but it was so close to 3.5 I had only bought one book and that was getting tatty.

Same here, I was about 8 years old at the time!

I'm a twentysomething. Guess it was in the final days of 1E though. Campaigns run completely on the fly, with just a handdrawn map, and ended in TPK when the DM got bored. Always seemed to end up in the Abyss in those campaigns. FR grey box came out and I read it in hospital having my appendix out. Good times... :)
