Which edition will have the largest representation in the 5th rules?

Flawed premise - that one edition has to have more of a representation than other editions.

Especially given that without definition, "representation" is meaningless a term in this context.

Yes I guess the question is whether a previous system can be emulated rather than represented.

But in regards to second edition D and D, how big is the second ed segment of the hobby? Furthermore, why is second edition is considered simpler than 3rd or 4th ed? Its been awhile since I played that edition:)

I expect the base system to use conceits of 3e and 4e: a unified task resolution method which debuted in 3e, character description via isolated elements (feats, powers), and a general tendency to avoid character limitations written directly in the rules (class/race restrictions or level limits in 1e/2e).

When this process began, I thought the Fifth Edition would be mostly Old Dungeons &Dragons and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons with the best and most modular parts of the Third and Fourth Editions. I still hope for that.

But seeing many of the demands in various threads for godlike wizardry, specific combat rules, huge lists of skills, rigid alignment mechanics and doing away with surges, rituals and powers, I cannot imagine how the compromise I envisioned will happen. Someone is going to get thrown off the island. As long as the Wizards continue to make the Fourth Edition on-line tools available, I do not have to care too much.

I think you can still have all of those things in 5e, just not in the core rules.
