two-handed weapons

Best: Greatsword
Close secod: Greataxe
The damage, IMO, can't be matched if you have that ever precious 18 Strength for that even Damage mod.

In 3.0 we have run 3 campaigns and in all 3 there has been someone using the Greatsword.

1st campaign 5 players; 1w/greatsword, 1w/greataxe.
It went down to 4 players, replaced 2 of the existing
pcs..1w/greatsword, 1w/greataxe.

alternate campaign 4players; 1w/greatsword, 1(Dwarf)w/waraxe

3rd campaign (replacing "1st") 4 players; 1w/greatsword, 1w/bastardsword.

In the alternate campaign if the greatsword wielder dies he plans on bringing in a halforc fighter with a spiked chain, that he has played before with a different group.

I have used a 16 Strength longsword and shield fighter in the 1st campaign alongside the 2 greatweapon wilders and really felt inferior to the damage they could do with a greatweapon and an 18 strength.

In the "3rd" campaign I am the user of the bastard sword because my pc is also a bit of an archer and this was the best weapon to use 1 handed, although in a stand up figth he drops the bow (or doesn't even 'draw it') and fights 2 handed.

Although if I could get my hands on a nicely spiked shield I would on occassion fight dual weapon style.

I've watched the first half or so of Berserk. It's a bit silly that Gatts can deflect arrows like that.

Even funnier was when Silver, with his rapier and no shield, can beat Gatts in a sword-fight. What the heck was his sword made of?

Well, I voted before I saw this was supposed to be Fighter only. My Thief-Acrobat is one of the primary combatants and uses a Longsword two-handed.

My wife's Duelist uses one-handed (with off-hand parry from her dagger). The half-orc is sword-and-board.

Of the big three, it looks like sword-n-board just got shoved into the back seat. We won't go into what might be done to it back there...suffice it to say it ain't pretty.

You have factored in Two-weapon fighting feats, correct? Given that they perfectly compliment 'sword and board'? Shield bash should also come into effect. The trade-off of damage for AC is not that extreme.
